Debate and Argumentation Skills

How To Teach Debate and Argumentation Skills

Objective:

To equip students with essential skills for effective debate and argumentation, including constructing logical arguments, employing persuasive techniques, and engaging in respectful discourse, thereby enhancing their critical thinking and public speaking abilities.

Introduction to Debate and Argumentation Skills

  • Explain the principles of debate and argumentation, emphasizing the importance of logical reasoning, evidence-based arguments, and the ability to consider and counter opposing viewpoints.
  • Discuss different types of arguments (e.g., deductive, inductive) and the structure of a formal debate, including opening statements, rebuttals, and conclusions.

Real Life Examples

  • Use examples from historical debates, courtroom trials, and parliamentary proceedings to illustrate effective argumentation and debate techniques.
  • Highlight the application of these skills in everyday situations, such as academic discussions, job interviews, and persuasive writing.

Interactive Activities

  • Organize mock debates on current events or age-appropriate topics, allowing students to practice forming arguments, presenting them clearly, and rebutting opposing views.
  • Conduct a ‘Balloon Debate' activity, where students must argue why their assigned character (historical, fictional, etc.) should remain in a metaphorical sinking balloon, fostering creativity and persuasive skills.
