You don’t have to keep wondering what those features are. Simply scroll down to make the most of them so you can have more fun while texting.

iMessage Features

Getting started with iMessage

If you are a seasoned iMessage user, you can skip this section. If you are new to the iOS environment, here’s how to turn on iMessage:

  • On your iPhone, open the Settings app > scroll down and choose Messages > toggle on iMessage at the top of the screen > if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID.

Once the application is enabled, you can send messages over cellular data or Wi-Fi and enjoy seamless integration across your Apple devices.

iMessage features for a fun chat experience

Express yourself better with message effects

Why settle for plain text when your messages can have a little personality? iMessage has a number of effects that can spice up your chats:

  • Bubble effects – Hold down the send button to show options such as Slam, Loud, Gentle, and Invisible Ink.
  • Screen effects – Swipe left while holding the send button to discover full-screen effects such as balloons, confetti, fireworks, and lasers.
  • Tapback reactions – Double-tap to respond quickly to messages and choose from heart, thumbs up, thumbs down, and other emoji responses.

Spice things up with memojis, stickers, or GIFs

Add a fun flair to your messages with iMessage's native stickers, Memojis, and GIFs:

  • Memojis & Animojis – Design your own animated avatar and send customized reactions with your own facial expressions.
  • Stickers – Download sticker packs from the App Store and drag them onto messages for playful overlays.
  • GIFs – Press the #images app in the iMessage drawer to discover and send popular GIFs.

Utilize rich media sharing

iMessage is more than text — you can share many different types of media files to make your conversations richer:

  • Photos & Videos – Press the camera icon to take and send photos or capture fast videos.
  • Live Photos – Press and hold a photo in a conversation to view it animate.
  • Audio Messages – Press and hold the microphone icon to record and send audio messages in seconds.
  • Location Sharing – Press the “i” button in a chat and tap Send My Current Location to send where you are.

Create group chats for free-flowing conversations

The messaging application not only lets you create group chats and invite your friends/family but also comes with several customization options. You can organize and make your group chats more fun with these features:

  • Name your group – Tap the group chat name, choose Change Name and Photo, and enter a custom name and photo.
  • Mentions & inline replies – Mention specific individuals with @username and reply to specific messages with inline replies.
  • Mute notifications – Swipe left on a group chat and tap the bell icon to silence notifications.

Play games within iMessage

Did you know that you can play games on iMessage? Head over to the iMessage App Store and download games such as GamePigeon, Words with Friends, and Cup Pong. Invite friends over for rapid games without exiting your conversation.

Read receipts & scheduling of messages

To improve communication management, tweak your iMessage settings:

  • Read receipts – Turn read receipts on or off for a specific conversation within the contact information.
  • Scheduled messages – Though iMessage lacks integrated scheduling, you can take advantage of the Shortcuts app to automate message delivery.

Lock down your chats with privacy features

Don’t want anybody to read your chats? Done! iMessage has several security features you can use to lock down your chats:

  • End-to-End Encryption – So only you and the other person can see your messages.
  • Hide alerts – Silence specific chats so you don't get distracted.
  • Auto-delete messages – Make messages automatically delete after 30 days or a year to clear storage.

Use iMessage on Multiple Devices

iMessage syncs across all your Apple devices, such as iPads and Macs. To turn this on:

  • Go to Settings > Messages.
  • Tap Text Message Forwarding.
  • Choose the devices you'll use with iMessage.

This feature makes sure you never miss a message, regardless of which Apple device you're on.

Share Music and more with the iMessage App

Personalize your iMessage experience with built-in apps, such as:

  • Apple Music – Share songs you love with direct links.
  • Apple Pay – Send and request money securely using Apple Pay with iMessage.
  • Translate – Send messages in any language using the Translate app inside iMessage.

Final Thoughts

iMessage is not only a messaging app — it's a vibrant tool that allows you to express yourself, stay in touch, and have fun while communicating.

By applying these features, you are able to take your conversations to a new level and get the best out of your iPhone's built-in messaging feature. So go ahead, play around with effects, and get your chats more interesting and exciting!
