How to Prepare for the AI Interview and Skill Assessments
Many AI training platforms screen you in two stages: a short interview, often run by an AI interviewer, and a skill check in your field. micro1 and Mercor, for example, use an AI interview, and Ethos says it uses AI tools to screen and match experts. The skill checks come after or instead.
This guide covers the format and how to prepare. It does not share real questions; platforms keep those confidential, and so should you.
The Two Stages
| Stage | What it is | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|
| AI-led interview | A conversation with an AI interviewer, often on camera, about your background and how you think | Specific examples from real work you have done |
| Skill assessment | Written or practical tasks in your field, often with a time guide or deadline | Accuracy, thoroughness and following every instruction |
How Screening Works on micro1, Ethos and Mercor
| Platform | Format (own pages, checked 2026-10-06 to 2026-10-20) | Retakes and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mercor | An AI interview of about 20 minutes, specific to the role, plus written or multiple-choice assessments | Up to three retakes of an interview across all your applications, but hiring managers can see your retake count and a retake resets your application progress, so save retakes for technical problems. Most written assessments allow one submission. Completed steps carry over to every later application and do not expire |
| Ethos | Screening questions about your background for each project, which may be run by an AI agent. Its voice interviews are recorded and transcribed, and AI tools write follow-up questions and evaluate the interview | You can ask for a human review of significant decisions made by its AI tools |
| micro1 | An on-demand AI interview with its AI recruiter, Zara: open-ended questions on your chosen role and scenario questions, plus a coding challenge for technical roles or a human data exercise for annotator roles | A real-time result on whether you meet its certification criteria, and you can request feedback if you do not pass. You can apply to other roles in the meantime |
| Your top pick in the AI Training Job Matcher | Not sure which platform to apply to first? Answer two questions | Points you to the platform that fits your background |
micro1 advises choosing one core skill or job type to be evaluated on, and treating the interview like a professional one: quiet space, stable connection, camera on. It also runs free AI practice interviews with feedback on its Interview Prep page.
Assessments are often unpaid. Ethos says it does not pay for preparation time unless that was approved in advance. Mercor is a notable exception: its work trial, a project-like assessment of four to six hours, is paid once per candidate.
Ethos works differently. Its AI interview is a relaxed voice conversation about your career story, the work you want next and where you are based, rather than a skills test, and there is no score at the end. Have a short version of your career story and two concrete examples ready. More on the Ethos page.

Before the Interview
- ✓Chrome on a laptop or desktop (Mercor does not support Firefox or phones)
- ✓A quiet room
- ✓A working camera, plus an external microphone and headphones
- ✓A stable internet connection, tested
- ✓Pen, paper and a calculator if your field needs them
- ✓Your profile open, so your answers match it
- ✓No VPN or iCloud Private Relay: Mercor blocks sign-ins through them
Those setup points come from Mercor's interview guide, which also says that if the AI interviewer cuts in while you pause, you can tell it you were not finished. Our Mercor AI interview guide covers the format and retakes in full.

During the Interview
- Use real examples from your own work: the situation, what you did, and what happened. Career advisers call this the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. MIT's career office suggests spending most of the answer on the Action, what you personally did.
- Keep talking through a thought. Trainers report that the AI interviewer can treat a pause as the end of your answer.
- Keep your claims consistent with your profile. Ethos, for one, can drop experts whose screening answers are inaccurate.

What My AI Interviews Were Like
I've done a couple of AI interviews now. One was audio only. The other was audio and video, with my screen recorded to make sure I wasn't using AI or anything else to help me. Each one took about 30 minutes.
You speak to an AI voice, and it's dynamic, so it responds to what you say. It's testing your expertise in the subject you chose.
My best advice is to prepare your STAR examples beforehand: Situation, Task, Action, Result. The interview I passed, I was talking about SEO, a subject I know well. The examples came easily because they were real, so I could talk about them with confidence and detail.
The interviewer latches onto one of your examples, and the rest of the interview flows from there and ties it back to the work you'd be doing. When I wasn't sure about a question, I went back to a real example from my own work.
Where I failed was picking topics I didn't know well enough. I couldn't talk about them with the right technical language, and that shows you up as not having enough experience.
I think of it as a loop. An expert is someone with a lot of experience, experience is what gives you the details, and the details are what show you're an expert.
In one generalist interview, I talked about the spreadsheet I set up to keep different incomes separate, feeding charts so I had something to look at instead of plain data. You can tell I've done that, because otherwise I couldn't describe it.

Before the Skill Check
Assessments marked “about an hour” often take longer for careful people. Applicants who pass commonly report budgeting two to three hours. Reviewers care about thoroughness and accuracy, not speed.
Mercor says most of its assessments have no strict time limit, and advises finishing in one session and keeping a backup of long written answers, since autosave is not guaranteed.

After You Pass: Onboarding Counts Too
Passing screening is not the last gate. Expect an identity check. Mercor runs it once, through Persona: you photograph your physical government ID (a photo of a screen is rejected) and record a short selfie video, and most checks finish within moments or one business day. micro1 asks you to scan an unexpired, original physical ID with your camera, then take a selfie; IDs in English or Arabic usually verify within minutes, others up to 72 hours. Ethos may ask for the same through Persona, with a live selfie photo and short video, plus sanctions screening. On all three, use the exact legal name on your ID.
Mercor also runs a background check through Certn or Zinc, covering identity, degrees, past jobs, professional licenses and criminal records. It usually takes five to seven business days, asks for seven years of home addresses, and must clear before you log any hours.
Onboarding comes next. There, it means reading the project instructions, which it calls your source of truth, plus training videos and, where required, sample tasks and qualification quizzes before real work. Mercor counts required training sessions as logged work on hourly contracts, and says late or heavily revised work can lead to a trial sprint and then the end of a contract. Take the training seriously, because your first scored tasks count.

Rules to Keep
- Do the assessment yourself. Mercor bans AI tools on assessments unless a task says otherwise, and some of its assessments switch off copy and paste. Other platforms have similar policies.
- Never share or post the questions you were asked. Trainers report that posting assessment content can cost the account.

What Working Trainers Say
Trainers on Reddit who have been through screening repeat four points.
- Treat the AI interview like one with a person. Answer with specific examples from your own work, and keep talking through a thought, since a pause can read as the end of your answer.
- Budget hours for the assessment. Trainers describe them as long and detailed, and most applicants do not pass.
- Results can take days or weeks, and some platforms never send a rejection. A long silence usually means no.
- Prepare from the guidelines and examples you are given. Asking for or sharing real questions breaks the confidentiality rules and can cost you the account.
