Yes, Prolific is a legit way to get paid for online studies, and some of those studies now involve rating and checking AI. It was co-founded at Oxford University in 2014, pays in cash through PayPal and sets a minimum hourly reward for every study. It is also built for occasional work, sign-up runs on a waitlist, and the AI studies go to people Prolific invites.
Everything below comes from Prolific's participant pages and help center, read on 2026-10-12, plus a pass through the Prolific subreddit the same day. DigiNo has no link with Prolific and earns nothing from it.
Is Prolific Legit?
Prolific connects researchers with people who take part in their online studies. Researchers post a study, estimate how long it takes and set a reward per hour. If you match their criteria, the study shows up on your dashboard.
You must be over 18 with a verified account. Prolific is open in most OECD countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and Japan, plus a few others on its list such as India and Brazil.
Prolific's own help center says the platform is not meant to be a full-time job. It describes it as a place for occasional studies.

How Signing Up Works
- Join the waitlist with a short form.
- Wait for an email invite. Prolific says this can take hours for some people and months or longer for others.
- Accept the invite and create your account.
- Verify your identity and finish a short practice task. Prolific says this takes about 15 minutes.
- Fill in your profile answers so studies can find you, then pick studies from your dashboard.
The waitlist is not first come, first served. Invites go out based on which demographics and skills researchers need at the time, and support cannot tell you your place.

Where AI Training Fits In
Prolific has two invite-only groups for people with stronger skills. Both sit on top of your normal account, and both are optional.
AI Taskers
AI taskers get extra studies that train and test AI models. Prolific lists the work as reviewing AI outputs for accuracy, fact checking AI text and giving detailed feedback.
You cannot apply for this group. Prolific picks people with high approval rates and strong past work, then invites them to a two-part AI Task Assessment. Failing it does not hurt your account. Prolific says it is rolling the group out slowly.
Domain Experts
Domain Experts are participants with verified skills in one field, such as law, programming, finance, healthcare, red teaming or a language. Their studies might ask them to review code or test an AI system for safety.
Prolific invites people whose profile fits a field in demand. Checks can include a skills test, document checks or a review of your qualifications. If you already have an account, Prolific says not to apply through outside job ads, because a second account breaks its rules.

How Prolific Pays
Every study shows its reward before you start. Prolific sets a floor that researchers must meet and publishes a suggested rate for expert studies.
| What Prolific states | Listed at |
|---|---|
| Minimum reward on any study | £6 or $8 per hour |
| Suggested rate researchers pay Domain Experts | $30-100 per hour |
| Smallest balance you can cash out | £6 or $6 |
These are rules and suggestions Prolific publishes, not what anyone will earn. How much you take home depends on which studies you are shown and how often.
Researchers review your submission before you are paid. If they have not approved it within 22 days, Prolific approves it automatically.
Payouts go to PayPal. Your first four cash-outs have a 72-hour wait between them, and after that you can cash out once a day.

Rules That Can Freeze Your Account
Prolific can put an account on hold, and it does not say which check you failed. Its help center lists common causes:
- Taking studies from a different country than the one on your account, or through a VPN.
- A PayPal account from another country, or one linked to another Prolific account.
- Many rejected submissions, or more than one account.
- Using AI tools to complete studies unless the researcher allows it.
You can still cash out what is already approved while on hold. Appeals can take up to four weeks, and if the hold is upheld the decision is final.

What Participants Say on Reddit
We read recent threads in r/ProlificAc, the main Prolific subreddit, up to 2026-10-12. Most threads are everyday questions about studies, and a few themes repeat.
- Getting into the AI groups takes a long record of careful, high-quality work. One member says they qualified after two hard tests that needed perfect scores.
- Another says AI studies appeared on their dashboard without an invite after a month with no rejections.
- AI image and video rating studies come in waves, and people describe being rotated in and out of them.
- Bonuses promised by researchers do not always arrive. One member kept a list of eleven unpaid bonuses going back to July.
- Support runs through a chatbot, and some people say they cannot reach a person.
