What Outlier Offers, for Comparison
Outlier is a platform operated by Scale AI. Contributors write prompts, rank AI outputs and improve model responses, and Outlier says projects may not always match your field.
You need at least an associate degree. Onboarding takes 30 to 90 minutes, with skill screenings and an ID check, and you need a valid ID and phone from your country, a resume and a LinkedIn profile. Pay runs weekly on Tuesdays through PayPal, Airtm or bank transfer, and you see the rate before each project.

Why People Look for Outlier Alternatives
We pulled the 800 most recent posts in r/outlier_ai on 2026-10-13, covering 2026-09-21 to 2026-10-13. 178 of them had “deactivated”, “suspended” or “banned” in the title.
- Accounts deactivated with little or no explanation, sometimes mid-project.
- Empty task queues across languages and countries while contributors wait for new batches.
- A project that required paid AI subscriptions, followed by a suspension soon after the contributor bought them.
Outlier still pays, as our Outlier review explains. The problem is relying on it alone.

The Platforms, One by One
Mercor
Mercor lists expert roles you can browse before making an account. You sign up with an email link or Google, with no password.
Most roles include an AI interview of about 20 minutes. You do each interview once and the result carries over to other roles that use it, and you can retake it up to three times. Passing an assessment can put you in the running for several roles at once.
Hourly contractors are paid every Wednesday through Stripe or Wise.

Ethos
Ethos matches professionals to client projects: calls, surveys, written reports, set tasks, or review and annotation of documents and data.
You must be 18 or over and legally able to work as an independent contractor where you live. You can decline any project without a penalty, and the payment terms are set at the start of each project.

DataAnnotation
DataAnnotation splits its work into general, multilingual, coding, STEM and professional tracks, and pay goes out through PayPal.
You get one Starter Assessment per track with no retakes. Read our DataAnnotation review and our guide to the DataAnnotation assessment before you start.

Alignerr
Alignerr is run by Labelbox. You sign in with Google, upload a resume that fills in your profile, and apply to listed jobs that show their requirements and pay.
A phone check and a Persona ID check follow, and some jobs add an interview or a domain test. Pay goes through Stripe Connect or PayPal. See our Alignerr review for what trainers report.

Mindrift
Toloka's tasks have moved to Mindrift. You start on tasks open to every member, such as judging AI responses and rating search results, then pass qualifications for specialized projects.
Mindrift says you can join from any country, subject to its eligibility rules. It pays twice a month through Payoneer or Tipalti, for tasks that are completed and accepted.

OneForma
OneForma is a Centific company. Its profile takes about five minutes and needs no resume, then it matches you to projects. It says it supports experts in more than 100 countries, with twice-monthly pay and no fees.

CrowdGen by Appen
CrowdGen is the contributor platform of Appen, founded in 1996. It matches domain experts in fields such as accounting, law, medicine, languages and software to projects, and most projects start with a qualification. CrowdGen says most of its projects need domain knowledge rather than technical skills.

Prolific
Prolific invites participants with high approval rates to a two-part AI Task Assessment. Passing adds AI evaluation studies to your dashboard, and failing does not affect your account. You cannot apply for it directly.

Handshake AI
Handshake AI pays students, professionals and experts hourly, and no AI experience is required. Open sign-up is for people based in the US with a work authorization it can support. Outside the US, Handshake says participation is currently invite-only.

Which One Should You Try First?

What Trainers on Reddit Say About Switching
- Many platforms ask for an unpaid test or AI interview, and some never reply, so apply to more than one.
- Calibration on a new project can take hours before paid tasks begin.
- Never pay anyone for access, a referral code or test answers.

Jobs Like Outlier AI FAQ
What is the best alternative to Outlier AI?
It depends on your background. Mercor and Ethos suit experienced professionals. DataAnnotation and Alignerr are the closest match for general rating and writing work. The AI Training Job Matcher on DigiNo asks two questions and points you to a fit.
Is DataAnnotation better than Outlier?
Neither is better for everyone. DataAnnotation gives one Starter Assessment per track with no retakes and pays through PayPal. Outlier needs at least an associate degree and pays weekly on Tuesdays. Many trainers use both.
Which Outlier alternatives work outside the US?
Mercor works with people in most countries and lists the places it cannot support. OneForma says it supports more than 100 countries, and Mindrift says you can join from any country under its eligibility rules. Handshake AI takes open applications only from people based in the US; elsewhere it is invite-only.
Why do people leave Outlier?
On r/outlier_ai, the most common complaints are deactivated accounts with little explanation and empty task queues. Outlier still pays, so most people add a second platform rather than leave.
