Mercor vs DataAnnotation: How the Two Platforms Differ

Mercor vs DataAnnotation from each platform’s own pages: sign-up, the AI interview vs the 1-shot test, listed pay, payday and Reddit reports.

Mercor is a marketplace of individual role listings you apply to, screened by a short AI interview. DataAnnotation is a single platform you enter through one written test, then pick projects from a dashboard. Most Mercor listings on the day we checked were named expert roles, while DataAnnotation has a general track as well as specialist ones.

Every fact below comes from each platform's own pages, read on 2026-10-13, plus recent threads in r/mercor_ai and r/DataAnnotationTech. DigiNo earns a referral if you join Mercor through our links, so we have kept its problems in here too. We have no link with DataAnnotation.

How You Get In

On Mercor, each listing has its own steps. Most include an AI interview of about 20 minutes, done once and reused for other roles that need the same interview. A practice interview does not count against you. Passing an assessment can make you eligible for several roles, sometimes without a separate application.

On DataAnnotation, you get one shot. You choose a track, take a Starter Assessment and wait for an email, which it says arrives within a few days if you pass. Our guide to the DataAnnotation assessment covers the format and how to prepare.

What Trainers on Reddit Report

Mercor

  • Projects get paused while a batch is reviewed. Some resume, and some people are offboarded.
  • A few contributors say hours were deducted from their pay after they were offboarded, with little explanation.
  • Experienced professionals praise the pay on some projects but complain about inconsistent reviewers and shifting targets.

DataAnnotation

  • Many applicants never hear back, and long-time members say silence after about two weeks usually means no.
  • Qualifications and projects can drop off a dashboard when demand changes.

Which One Fits You

  • Choose Mercor if you have a professional background and want to apply to specific roles, with a retake if the interview goes badly.
  • Choose DataAnnotation if you want a general track, can give one written test your full attention, and prefer picking projects yourself.
  • Apply to both if you qualify. Their screens are different, so failing one says little about the other.

Ethos is a third option for professionals. It matches you to client projects that include calls, surveys, written reports, and review and annotation, and you can decline any project without a penalty.
