AI Training Guide · Step 1 of 11
What Is an AI Trainer?
An AI trainer is a person who checks, rates and improves what an AI model produces, so the model learns what a good answer looks like.
It is paid, remote contract work, often billed by the hour. The roles listed highest are usually for people with expertise in a field such as medicine, law, finance or engineering.
What an AI Trainer Does
AI companies need human judgment to teach their models. An AI trainer supplies that judgment in a few repeatable ways:
- Reading two or more AI responses and scoring which is better, with a reason.
- Writing the ideal answer, so the model sees what correct and complete looks like.
- Writing realistic, hard questions that expose where a model fails.
- Checking for wrong facts, missed instructions and unsafe content.
- Red teaming: writing prompts that try to get a model to break its safety rules, then recording what happened.
- Tagging text, images, audio or video so a model can learn from it.
Tasks are done against a detailed written guideline, and platforms track the quality of your work against it. Mercor‘s glossary calls rating work evals: scoring AI outputs against quality standards and rubrics, the scoring guides that keep raters consistent.

The Main Types of AI Training Work
| Type | What you do | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Generalist evaluation | Rate and rewrite everyday AI responses | Strong writers and careful readers |
| Specialist or expert review | Check answers in your own field for accuracy | Nurses, doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, scientists |
| Coding evaluation | Test and fix code the model writes | Software developers |
| Language and audio work | Transcribe, translate or record in your language | Native and bilingual speakers |
| Data annotation | Label documents, images, audio or text | Detail-focused people |
Who Gets Hired
Listings tend to ask for one of two profiles.
- Generalists with clear written English and care for detail.
- Specialists with a degree, a license or years of experience in a field. Specialist listings are usually listed far higher than generalist ones.
Location matters as much as background. Each Mercor listing states the countries it hires in; Mercor says a listing that names no location is open by default to people in the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, and there are some countries where it cannot onboard anyone. At least one platform hires only in the US.
No AI background is needed. Mercor matches people to roles on their professional experience, their results in past interviews and assessments, and the skills on their profile.

Listed Pay by Field
Mercor publishes an hourly range on most of its open listings. Grouped by Mercor's own field labels, they show how far apart fields sit.
| Field | Open listings | Listed hourly range | Range shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Science (life, physical and social) | 62 | $60 to $110 | Middle half |
| Software engineering | 41 | $58 to $150 | Middle half |
| Languages and audio | 30 | $16 to $100 | Middle half |
| Other engineering | 29 | $45 to $120 | Middle half |
| Data analysis | 24 | $46 to $120 | Middle half |
| Finance | 21 | $60 to $150 | Middle half |
| Business operations | 21 | $60 to $115 | Middle half |
| Medicine and nursing | 19 | $60 to $180 | Middle half |
| Arts and design | 15 | $30 to $79 | Middle half |
| Law | 11 | $60 to $150 | Middle half |
| Mixed and generalist roles | 11 | $26 to $70 | Middle half |
| Humanities | 3 | $40 to $70 | Full range |
These are the hourly ranges the listings state, not what anyone will earn. Actual pay depends on the project, and a listing is no guarantee of work. Middle half means the lowest and highest quarter of listings in that field are left out, so one unusual listing does not stretch the range. Open listings counts every listing in the field; the range uses the hourly ones only.

How the Hiring Process Usually Works
- Apply on the platform, such as Mercor or Ethos, or let the AI Training Job Matcher pick for you, and build a profile around your real experience.
- Pass a short screening, often an AI-led interview or a written assessment.
- Complete a skill check in your field. Mercor says most of its assessments allow only one submission, so prepare first.
- Get matched to a project, take its training, and start paid tasks.
- Keep your work quality high. Mercor says strong assessment results can lead to faster matching and invitations to further projects.

What the Work Is Like
You work from home and mostly choose your own hours. Each Mercor contract sets a maximum number of hours a week, and some platforms set no minimum hours.
How you are paid depends on the platform and the project. Mercor says hourly contracts are its most common format; some projects pay per completed deliverable instead, and a project can switch between the two. Most listings in Mercor's public feed were hourly on 2026-10-08, with a smaller share paid per task. Ethos pays on a cycle agreed for each project, or when the project ends.
No minimum also means no guarantee. Trainers on Reddit describe projects that start and stop and queues that sit empty for days or weeks, and many keep two platforms going so a quiet week on one is covered by the other.

I came to AI training work during a job hunt that brought nothing but rejections, and I needed something remote.
What surprised me in the first week was the pay. After all the rejections and silence, this felt alive. The AI interview gave quick feedback, and for once things were moving.

AI Trainer FAQ
What is an AI trainer?
A person who rates, corrects and writes examples for AI models so they learn to give better answers. The work is remote contract work, often paid by the hour.
What does an AI trainer do day to day?
Reads AI responses, scores them against a guideline, explains the score, rewrites weak answers, and writes prompts that test the model. Some roles label images, audio or video instead.
Do you need a degree to be an AI trainer?
It depends on the platform and the role. Specialist roles in health, law, finance and engineering ask for a degree, a license or years in the field, and they are usually listed much higher.
Is AI trainer a real job?
Yes. Mercor, for example, pays contractors weekly, on Wednesday for the previous week's hours, and states it never charges talent a fee, so anyone asking you to pay is not a real platform.
How do I become an AI trainer?
Start with Mercor, Ethos or your top pick in the AI Training Job Matcher, pass its screening and skill check, then keep the quality of your work high.
