AI Training Guide · Step 4 of 11
How to Become an AI Trainer
To become an AI trainer, you pick a platform that fits your background, pass its screening and skill check, then keep your quality scores high.
You do not need an AI course, a certificate or past AI experience. None of the platform pages checked for this guide asks for one. Mercor‘s profile guide asks for your real roles, measurable outcomes and languages instead. Platforms look for clear written English and, for specialist roles, real expertise in a field.
Mercor does run free, self-paced Mercor Academy courses that end in a certificate. It says the certificate can lead to projects but does not guarantee one.

Step 1: Know Which Kind of AI Trainer You Are
| Type | What you need | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Generalist | Strong written English and attention to detail | The usual entry point |
| Specialist | A degree, license or years in a field | Usually listed far higher |
| Language expert | Native or bilingual fluency | Transcription, translation, voice work |
| Coder | Professional programming experience | Code evaluation and fixing |
If you have a professional background, lead with it. Expert listings ask for nurses, physicians, lawyers, finance specialists and engineers by name.

Step 2: Choose the Right Platform
Platforms differ in who they hire and where. Some take generalists, some focus on experts, and some only take people in certain countries.
- Mercor: experts and professionals; an assessment you pass once can qualify you for several roles.
- Ethos: paid expert opportunities for experienced professionals, as an independent contractor.
- Your top pick in the AI Training Job Matcher: answer two questions about your background and languages and it points you to the platform that fits you best.
Check that you can work from where you live. Mercor cannot onboard anyone in some countries, and it does not sponsor visas. Its own guides say it cannot take people on a UK Student visa, and that most H-1B holders in the US may not do contract work outside their sponsoring employer.
Skip any listing that asks you to pay, promises steady hours, or moves you to a chat app. Mercor says it never asks talent for any payment or fee. Ethos says in its terms that it makes no promise about how much work will be available, and some platforms set no minimum hours. The FTC says task scams usually start with an unexpected text or WhatsApp message. Step 2 covers scams in full.

Step 3: Build a Specific Profile
- Name your field, years of experience and credentials in the first lines.
- List concrete work: “reviewed inpatient charts”, not “healthcare experience”.
- Include languages you can work in at a professional level.
- Never claim credentials you do not have. Mercor reviews credentials before approving experts and warns against exaggerated job titles in its profile guide, and Ethos can remove experts who answer screening questions inaccurately.

Step 4: Pass the Screening and Skill Check
- Sign up with one account, a real mobile number and no VPN. Mercor bans duplicate accounts, does not accept VoIP numbers for its phone check, and blocks sign-ins through VPNs and iCloud Private Relay.
- Expect an AI-led interview or a written assessment first.
- Prepare a quiet room, a working camera and microphone and a steady connection, as Mercor's interview guide advises.
- For the skill check, re-read every instruction. It is the tip repeated most by people who passed.
- Retakes are often limited. Mercor says most of its assessments allow only one submission, so do not rush the first attempt.

Step 5: Do Excellent First Tasks
Early work counts. Mercor says strong assessment results can lead to faster matching and invitations to more projects, and it can end a contract over late or substandard work.
- Read the full guideline before the first task.
- Verify facts instead of trusting confident-sounding answers.
- Write short, specific justifications that point to the exact problem.
- Choose accuracy over speed: reviewers judge thoroughness, not pace.

Can You Become an AI Trainer With No Experience?
Yes, for many generalist and data annotation roles. Clear written English matters most, and at least one platform asks for an associate degree rather than work experience. Your top pick in the AI Training Job Matcher shows where your background fits.
Specialist roles do need real experience. For a full picture of the work, read what an AI trainer does.
