Many AI training platforms screen you in two stages: a short interview, often run by an AI interviewer, and a skill check in your field. Mercor, for example, uses an AI interview, and Ethos says it uses AI tools to screen and match experts. The skill checks come after or instead.

This guide covers the format and how to prepare. It does not share real questions; platforms keep those confidential, and so should you.

The Two Stages

StageWhat it isWhat it rewards
AI-led interviewA conversation with an AI interviewer, often on camera, about your background and how you thinkSpecific examples from real work you have done
Skill assessmentWritten or practical tasks in your field, often with a time guide or deadlineAccuracy, thoroughness and following every instruction

How Screening Works on Mercor and Ethos

PlatformFormat (own pages, checked 2026-10-06 to 2026-10-08)Retakes and notes
MercorAn AI interview of about 20 minutes, specific to the role, plus written or multiple-choice assessmentsUp to three retakes of an interview across all your applications, but hiring managers can see your retake count and a retake resets your application progress, so save retakes for technical problems. Most written assessments allow one submission. Completed steps carry over to every later application and do not expire
EthosScreening questions about your background for each project, which may be run by an AI agent. Its voice interviews are recorded and transcribed, and AI tools write follow-up questions and evaluate the interviewYou can ask for a human review of significant decisions made by its AI tools
Your top pick in the AI Training Job MatcherNot sure which platform to apply to first? Answer two questionsPoints you to the platform that fits your background

Our top pick‘s AI interview runs 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes for each skill being assessed. You answer open-ended questions out loud, in real time, and the session is recorded so human recruiters can review it.

Assessments are often unpaid. Ethos says it does not pay for preparation time unless that was approved in advance. Mercor is a notable exception: its work trial, a project-like assessment of four to six hours, is paid once per candidate.

Ethos works differently. Its AI interview is a relaxed voice conversation about your career story, the work you want next and where you are based, rather than a skills test, and there is no score at the end. Have a short version of your career story and two concrete examples ready. More on the Ethos page.

Before the Interview

Set up the day before
  • ✓Chrome on a laptop or desktop (Mercor does not support Firefox or phones)
  • ✓A quiet room
  • ✓A working camera, plus an external microphone and headphones
  • ✓A stable internet connection, tested
  • ✓Pen, paper and a calculator if your field needs them
  • ✓Your profile open, so your answers match it
  • ✓No VPN or iCloud Private Relay: Mercor blocks sign-ins through them

Those setup points come from Mercor's interview guide, which also says that if the AI interviewer cuts in while you pause, you can tell it you were not finished.

During the Interview

  1. Use real examples from your own work: the situation, what you did, and what happened.
  2. Keep talking through a thought. Trainers report that the AI interviewer can treat a pause as the end of your answer.
  3. Keep your claims consistent with your profile. Ethos, for one, can drop experts whose screening answers are inaccurate.

Answering "Tell me about your experience"
Weak answer
I have a lot of experience in healthcare and I am very detail oriented. I love learning about AI.
Strong answer
I have spent seven years as an ICU nurse. A big part of the job is checking documentation and catching errors before they reach the patient, which is close to what this work asks for.

Before the Skill Check

Assessments marked “about an hour” often take longer for careful people. Applicants who pass commonly report budgeting two to three hours. Reviewers care about thoroughness and accuracy, not speed.

Mercor says most of its assessments have no strict time limit, and advises finishing in one session and keeping a backup of long written answers, since autosave is not guaranteed.

How to approach a skill check
1
Read every instruction twice
Re-reading instructions is the tip people who passed repeat most, since a missed word limit or format is an easy way to fail.
2
Check the rules on time and retakes
Retakes are often limited, so treat the first attempt as the real one.
3
Work accuracy first
Verify facts instead of trusting confident wording.
4
Explain your reasoning
Where you are asked why, point to the exact line and the reason.
5
Stay consistent
Rate similar items the same way and keep one interpretation of each rule from start to finish. Inconsistency is a reported failure pattern.
6
Review before submitting
Check every requirement against your answer one last time.

After You Pass: Onboarding Counts Too

Passing screening is not the last gate. Expect an identity check. Mercor runs it once, through Persona: you photograph your physical government ID (a photo of a screen is rejected) and record a short selfie video, and most checks finish within moments or one business day. Our top pick asks you to scan an unexpired, original physical ID with your camera, then take a selfie; IDs in English or Arabic usually verify within minutes, others up to 72 hours. Ethos may ask for the same through Persona, with a live selfie photo and short video, plus sanctions screening. On all three, use the exact legal name on your ID.

Mercor also runs a background check through Certn or Zinc, covering identity, degrees, past jobs, professional licenses and criminal records. It usually takes five to seven business days, asks for seven years of home addresses, and must clear before you log any hours.

Onboarding comes next. There, it means reading the project instructions, which it calls your source of truth, plus training videos and, where required, sample tasks and qualification quizzes before real work. Mercor counts required training sessions as logged work on hourly contracts, and says late or heavily revised work can lead to a trial sprint and then the end of a contract. Take the training seriously, because your first scored tasks count.

Rules to Keep

  • Do the assessment yourself. Mercor bans AI tools on assessments unless a task says otherwise, and some of its assessments switch off copy and paste. Other platforms have similar policies.
  • Never share or post the questions you were asked. Trainers report that posting assessment content can cost the account.

What Working Trainers Say

Trainers on Reddit who have been through screening repeat four points.

  • Treat the AI interview like one with a person. Answer with specific examples from your own work, and keep talking through a thought, since a pause can read as the end of your answer.
  • Budget hours for the assessment. Trainers describe them as long and detailed, and most applicants do not pass.
  • Results can take days or weeks, and some platforms never send a rejection. A long silence usually means no.
  • Prepare from the guidelines and examples you are given. Asking for or sharing real questions breaks the confidentiality rules and can cost you the account.

This section draws on Reddit threads such as: Reddit thread, Reddit thread.

My AI interview took about 25 to 30 minutes. Talking to the camera felt natural, but a few questions caught me off guard, and it takes a couple of answers to find your feet.

What worked best was turning each question back to something I know well, like SEO or spreadsheets, and giving a real example from my own work. A clear story from your own experience beats struggling through a question.
