Yes, you can do AI training work from the UK. On 2026-10-13, Mercor, Outlier and Prolific all named the United Kingdom on their own country pages, and Ethos is itself a company registered in England and Wales. Handshake AI was the clear exception: open sign-up there is for US workers.
Every answer below comes from each platform's own country, terms or help pages, read on 2026-10-13. Where a platform's pages do not say, we say that too, because rules on who can join change often.
Which Platforms Accept UK Workers
| Platform | What its own pages say about the UK (2026-10-13) |
|---|---|
| Mercor | Yes. The United Kingdom is on its supported countries list. Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar are on its unsupported list. |
| Ethos | Registered in England and Wales. Its pages do not list the UK as a payout country by name; your country is checked when you add Revolut or Wise. |
| Outlier | Yes. The United Kingdom is on its list of countries you may work from. |
| Prolific | Yes. The UK is on its supported countries list, and the company is based in London. |
| Mindrift (now also home to Toloka tasks) | Not excluded. The UK is not on its restricted or unsupported lists. |
| Handshake AI | No for open sign-up. It asks for US work authorization, and international places are invite-only. |
| DataAnnotation, Alignerr, Clickworker, OneForma, CrowdGen, RWS TrainAI | Unclear. None publishes a UK yes or no; some set countries project by project. |
Two of those pages say outright that the rules move. Clickworker switches registration off in a country when it has enough workers there, and OneForma and CrowdGen set countries for each project.

Mercor for UK Workers
Mercor has a page written for UK contractors. These are the points that matter before you apply:
- You need the right to work in the UK as self-employed. Mercor does not sponsor visas.
- Mercor cannot take on anyone holding a UK Student visa, whatever the hours.
- It contracts with individuals only. If you run a limited company, you are still paid as a person.
- You fill in a US form called a W-8BEN when you accept an offer. Mercor says the tax number to enter is normally your National Insurance number.
- Mercor does not issue invoices or tax receipts. Your Stripe account shows your payment history.
Contracts are in US dollars. UK payouts go through Stripe and are converted to pounds when they land, and the first payout is held for 7 days. Listings that name no location are open by default to the US, Canada, the UK and the EU.

Ethos for UK Workers
Ethos Artificial Intelligence Limited is registered in England and Wales, with an office in King's Cross, London. Its expert terms are governed by English law.
Ethos pays through Revolut or Wise. When you set up payouts you enter your country, and Ethos checks it against the countries those two services support. Its pages do not list those countries, so the payout step is where you find out.
You must be 18 or over and legally allowed to work as an independent contractor where you live. Tax and immigration status are your own responsibility under its terms.

Other Platforms That Take UK Workers
Outlier lists the UK as a country you may work from. It may check your ID and location at sign-up, does not allow a VPN, and does not sponsor visas. It pays weekly through PayPal, Airtm or bank transfer.
Prolific runs paid research studies, including AI tasks for an invite-only group. Eligibility depends on where you live, not your nationality, and you can cash out to PayPal from 6 pounds.
Mindrift took over Toloka's task work. It says you can join from any country not on its restricted lists, and it pays through Payoneer or Tipalti, depending on where you live.

What UK Trainers Report on Reddit
We read recent UK threads in r/outlier_ai on 2026-10-13. These are individual reports, not platform policy.
- A country being on the list does not open every project. One UK trainer was told a specific project was not available in their location.
- Visa status matters. One poster lost their account after signing up while their UK visa did not allow freelance work.
- Moving abroad matters too. People asked how to keep working during a study move, and one was banned after moving away before starting.
- UK contributors ask each other about registering with HMRC for Self Assessment.
There is also a steady run of posts trying to buy or rent UK accounts. Never sell, lend or borrow an account. Platforms check identity and location, and the account holder carries the risk.

Tax: What GOV.UK Says
This is signposting, not tax advice. AI training platforms treat UK workers as self-employed contractors, and Mercor says it withholds no tax.
- GOV.UK lists being paid for a service you provide as a sign that you are trading. Start at its working for yourself page.
- There is a trading allowance of up to 1,000 pounds a year. Above that, GOV.UK says to register for Self Assessment.
- If you need a tax return for the 2025 to 2026 tax year and have not filed one before, GOV.UK says to register for Self Assessment by 5 October 2026.
- Self-employed National Insurance is usually paid through Self Assessment. GOV.UK lists the current rates.
