The Mercor AI interview is a recorded video conversation with an AI interviewer that asks questions about the role you applied for. Most take about 20 minutes. You can practice as often as you like for free, and you get up to three retakes, but hiring managers can see how many you used.
This post covers the format and how to prepare, from Mercor's own help pages read on 2026-10-13. It shares no real interview questions. Mercor asks candidates to keep those private, and so do we.
What the Mercor AI Interview Is
An AI interviewer asks you role-specific questions out loud. Mercor makes a transcript of your responses and uses it to judge your fit for the listing.
- Most interviews run about 20 minutes. Some are shorter or longer.
- Interviews are in English unless the listing says otherwise.
- Some are technical and go deep into your past work. Others test language or reasoning.
- Some ask you to share your full screen, and some include a whiteboard that saves on its own.
- Captions are on by default.
You only sit each unique interview once. If a later application needs the same interview, Mercor reuses your result.
There is no human alternative. Mercor says the AI interview is its only screening method, and it cannot be done by chat or phone instead.

Where the Interview Fits in Mercor's Screening
The interview is usually one step in an application. Mercor lists the other steps a role may ask for:
- The AI interview.
- Assessments in your field. Most have no strict time limit, and most allow a single submission.
- For some roles, a work trial. It is a project-like task that typically takes four to six hours, and Mercor pays for one work trial per person.
Completed steps carry over to every later application and do not expire. Mercor's matching system also uses your interview and assessment results to send instant offers for roles you never applied to, so a strong first interview keeps working for you.

Practice First, and Treat Retakes as a Safety Net
Mercor has a free Practice Interview. It is not tied to any application, it is never shared with companies, and you can take it as many times as you like. Do it at least once before the real one.
Official interviews allow up to three retakes across every application that uses that interview. Mercor's waiting room asks you to keep retakes for technical problems, and it notes that hiring managers can see your retake count. A retake also resets your application progress.
So treat your first official attempt as the one that counts. If your microphone fails or the session freezes, retake it from the Assessments tab and email Mercor support with a screenshot.

Set Up the Day Before
- ✓A computer, not a phone
- ✓Chrome (recommended), Edge or Safari. Firefox and mobile browsers are not supported
- ✓A working camera and microphone, both tested, with your full face in view
- ✓Headphones and an external microphone, which Mercor recommends
- ✓A quiet room and a stable internet connection
- ✓Pen, paper and a calculator if your field needs them
- ✓VPNs, ad blockers and privacy extensions switched off
- ✓Your Mercor profile open, so your answers match it
In the waiting room, run every check on the Setup checks tab and play the test sound. The Start interview button stays grey until the required checks pass.
Mercor also blocks sign-ins through VPNs and anonymizing services, which includes iCloud Private Relay. Turn them off before you sign in, not just before you start.

How to Answer
Answer with real examples from your own work. Career advisers call this the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. MIT's career office suggests spending most of the answer on the Action, meaning what you personally did.
Keep answers brief and avoid long silences. Mercor says a long pause can make the AI cut in. If it does, tell it you were not finished. If a question is unclear, ask it to repeat or clarify.
Keep every claim consistent with your profile. Trainers on Reddit add one practical step: before the interview, make sure your resume uses the same skill words as the listing, so your profile and your answers line up.
The second answer gives the reviewer something they can check. It names the role, the years and the exact skill the work needs.
In an AI interview, the interviewer follows your lead. It latches onto one thing you mention and tries to squeeze everything out of it. You are in control in a way, so whatever example you give is the one it rolls with.
So prepare your two or three main examples beforehand, ones you can speak about with confidence and in detail. You should be able to run each one through the STAR method as if it is the thing you know most about in the world.
In one interview I anchored on a science example, and science is not my specialty. I was scrambling for content and hoping it would not ask another difficult question. In others I focused on SEO, and it was natural and flowing because I knew my example inside out.
It comes down to applying for roles you are genuinely qualified for. In an interview for a British English expert role, I studied English at university and I am English, so I was not anxious. The answers just rolled off my tongue.

Rules That Can Cost You the Application
- Write your own responses. Mercor allows grammar and wording checks, but bans using AI chatbots to compose your responses.
- Never post your interview questions or screenshots. Mercor lets you talk about your general experience, but not specific questions or anything confidential.
Mercor keeps the video, audio and an AI-generated transcript of official interviews to judge your application. It says it does not sell that data or use it to train AI models.

After the Interview
Your application page shows which steps are still pending and when an application is ready to submit. If you pass and receive an offer, two checks come next.
- An identity check through Persona, usually only once. You photograph your physical ID with your camera and record a short video.
- A background check through Certn or Zinc. Mercor says it typically takes one to two weeks, and you must be cleared before you start work or log hours.
Guide step 6 covers the skill assessment in more depth: how to prepare for the AI interview and skill assessments.
