Biology AI trainer jobs pay life scientists to write hard research questions for AI models, grade the answers, and catch the ones that would fail at the bench. Most listings want a graduate degree or real lab experience, and chemistry roles work the same way.
Everything here was read on 2026-10-13 from the platforms' own pages and public listings. I do AI training work myself, and the science listings are very specific about the experience they want.
What a Biology AI Trainer Does
The science listings describe three kinds of task:
- Writing a research problem from your own work, with the system, the data and the controls, plus the reference answer the model is graded against.
- Grading AI-written experimental designs and interpretations: do the controls rule out what they claim, do the statistics fit, does the conclusion follow from the data.
- Flagging answers that read like a textbook but would not work in a real lab, along with made-up citations and overstated claims.
Some roles go further. DataAnnotation's experimental biologist role has you build tasks with real files, such as plate maps, gel images and flow summaries, then grade what an AI agent produces from them. Its computational biologist role works with count matrices, variant files and pipeline logs in Python or R.

Chemistry Roles Work the Same Way
Chemistry listings swap the bench for the flask. Mercor‘s Chemistry Expert pool has you write synthesis and characterization problems, check whether a model's proposed route and mechanism make sense, and test whether the spectra match the structure it assigned.
DataAnnotation's Chemist role asks you to review AI output for impossible mechanisms, unsafe procedures and misread spectra, then write the answer a trained chemist would give.

Who Gets Hired
The bar depends on the role. Here is what each listing asked for on the day we checked.
- Mercor's Biology Expert pool asks for a graduate degree in biology or a related life science, with research experience.
- Mercor's Molecular Biology Experts listings want an advanced degree with a PhD strongly preferred, hands-on design of primers, plasmids, guide RNAs or mRNA constructs, and a strong publication record.
- DataAnnotation's Biologist and Chemist pages ask for graduate-level knowledge or equivalent research experience, and say no degree is required.
- DataAnnotation's Experimental and Computational Biologist roles want 3 or more years of lab or analysis work after your first degree, a master's or PhD from the US, Canada, Europe or the UK, and residence in the US, Canada or the UK.
- Scale AI's STEM Fellow listing is for PhDs, postdocs and professors in fields including biology and chemistry, with US work authorization for the US listing. A UK listing was also open.
Mercor says where you trained matters less than whether you designed and ran the experiments yourself, recently enough to explain your calls.

Where Biology AI Trainer Jobs Are Listed
These are the science roles we found with a rate on the listing, on 2026-10-13. They are listed rates, not earnings.
| Platform | Science role | Listed at |
|---|---|---|
| Mercor | Biology Expert | $70-105/hr |
| Mercor | Molecular Biology Experts (US and UK listings) | $70-105/hr |
| Mercor | Chemistry Expert | $65-105/hr |
| Mercor | Inorganic Chemistry and Synthesis Expert | $84/hr |
| Mercor | Biologist and Chemist Talent Networks | $60-80/hr |
| DataAnnotation | Biologist, Chemist, Experimental and Computational Biologist | Up to $40-125+/hr |
The small print on each listing matters.
- Mercor's Biology and Chemistry Expert listings are standing pools. You apply, take an AI interview of about 20 minutes, and get invited to a project listing that names the rate, hours and client when one opens.
- Mercor's Molecular Biology roles are W-2 employment through a company called Cincinnatus LLC, placed with an AI lab, at up to 40 hours a week.
- One Mercor life sciences listing, the Biochemistry and Life Sciences Domain Expert, is a full-time hybrid role in the Bay Area, not remote.
- Mindrift has a STEM project page with an example biology task, but on the day we checked it said the domain was quiet.
- Alignerr's jobs page has a STEM filter, but the roles it showed that day were coding and audio work.
- Outlier says it prefers graduate students, master's holders and PhDs in the relevant field, and lists no public rates.

What Science Trainers Say on Reddit
We read biology and chemistry threads in the Outlier subreddit from March to June 2026, plus a thread where a PhD asked other trainers for advice.
- Having the biology skill on your profile does not mean there is biology work. One trainer said they saw no biology projects in the two months after joining.
- Trainers say Outlier adds a science skill only when your resume and linked LinkedIn show a finished degree or work experience in it. Students were told to wait until they graduate.
- Projects end without much warning. Contributors on one chemistry project said they were moved to unapproved status when it closed.
- The common advice is to apply to several platforms at once, so one closed project or account does not stop your work.

How to Apply as a Biologist or Chemist
- Put your field, degree and lab techniques at the top of your resume. Name the methods: cloning, flow cytometry, RNA-seq, synthesis, spectroscopy.
- Apply to the role that matches your specialty first. Specialist listings usually ask for more and list higher rates than generalist ones.
- Prepare for an AI interview where you explain how you designed an experiment and why you made each call.
- Expect to wait. Standing pools only contact you when a project needs your field.
- Keep your own record of tasks and hours from the first day.

Biology AI Trainer FAQ
What does a biology AI trainer do?
You write research-level biology questions with reference answers, grade AI-written experimental designs and interpretations, and flag answers that would fail in a real lab or cite papers that do not exist.
Do you need a PhD to be a biology AI trainer?
Not always. Mercor's Biology Expert pool asks for a graduate degree with research experience, its molecular biology roles strongly prefer a PhD, and DataAnnotation's Biologist page says no degree is required if you have equivalent research experience.
How much do biology AI trainer jobs pay?
Rates are set per project. The table in this post shows what six science listings stated on 2026-10-13. Those are listed rates, not earnings.
Can chemists do AI training work?
Yes. Mercor and DataAnnotation both listed chemistry roles on 2026-10-13, covering synthesis routes, mechanisms and spectra. The AI Training Job Matcher on DigiNo can point you to the best fit.
