You make money on Mercor by getting hired onto a project as an independent contractor, usually on an hourly contract. The rate is set in each listing and offer, you track your hours in a desktop app, and Mercor pays every Wednesday for the week before. How much work you get depends on the project, its weekly hour cap and whether it keeps running.
Everything below comes from Mercor's own help pages and its public job listings, read on 2026-10-13, plus a pass through the Mercor subreddit. Nothing here is a promise of work or pay.
Start by Getting Through Screening
Each listing asks for some mix of an AI interview, assessments in your field and, for some roles, a paid work trial. Completed steps carry over to later applications and do not expire.
Mercor also sends instant offers. Its matching system looks at your interview and assessment results, skills and availability, and a hiring team can offer you a role you never applied to. Declining one does not hurt your chances for others.
The interview is where most people start. Our guide to the Mercor AI interview covers the format, retakes and setup.

What Mercor Listings Pay
Every Mercor listing states its own rate, and your hourly rate is shown again in your offer. Here is what the open listings stated on the day we checked, grouped by field.
| Field | Open listings | Listed hourly range | Range shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Science (life, physical and social) | 63 | $60 to $110 | Middle half |
| Software engineering | 38 | $60 to $150 | Middle half |
| Languages and audio | 38 | $22 to $100 | Middle half |
| Other engineering | 31 | $45 to $118 | Middle half |
| Data analysis | 23 | $46 to $115 | Middle half |
| Medicine and nursing | 21 | $65 to $175 | Middle half |
| Finance | 19 | $62 to $172 | Middle half |
| Business operations | 18 | $60 to $120 | Middle half |
| Arts and design | 12 | $30 to $80 | Middle half |
| Law | 11 | $60 to $150 | Middle half |
| Mixed and generalist roles | 10 | $32 to $70 | Middle half |
These are the hourly ranges the listings state, not what anyone will earn. Actual pay depends on the project, and a listing is no guarantee of work. Middle half means the lowest and highest quarter of listings in that field are left out, so one unusual listing does not stretch the range. Open listings counts every listing in the field; the range uses the hourly ones only.

The Two Kinds of Mercor Contract
| Hourly contract | Deliverable-based contract | |
|---|---|---|
| How you are paid | For each hour you track | A fixed amount once every deliverable is submitted and approved |
| Time tracking | Required, through the Insightful desktop app | Set per contract; most do not need it |
| Hours | A weekly cap set in the contract | No weekly hours, and no minimum hourly guarantee |
| How common | The most common format | Used for set pieces of work such as rubrics and assessments, often after an earlier project |
On an hourly contract, Mercor pays for the hours you log whatever the quality of the work. Poor work still affects whether you get future projects.
A deliverable-based contract pays nothing for partial work. Mercor says most are meant to be finished in about seven days and are paid on average within three business days of completion.
A project can switch between hourly and task-based pay while it runs. Mercor says the change is announced first and never reprices work you have already done.

How Time Tracking Works
Hourly work is tracked in Insightful, a desktop timer that can take screenshots to confirm you are working. Hours not tracked in Insightful are not paid, and adding time by hand is not allowed except as a reviewed one-off.
Mercor pays for:
- Project tasks within the agreed scope.
- Mercor webinars that are part of your contract.
- Approved meetings needed to deliver your work.
- Required training sessions on hourly contracts.
Hours can be removed only for policy breaks, spam or bad-faith work, or time logged while not working on the project. Mercor says a person reviews screenshots and activity before any hours are removed. You can dispute a removal with your project lead during the following pay period.
Each contract has a weekly cap, and you cannot go over it unless your project lead agrees. You can hold more than one hourly contract if each project lead knows your availability.

When and How Mercor Pays
- The work week runs from Saturday 00:00 to Friday 23:59, India Standard Time. Late Thursday hours in the Americas can already fall in the next week.
- Mercor reviews the logs after the Friday cutoff.
- Mercor releases pay every Wednesday around 12:00 PM Pacific time.
- Stripe or Wise sends it to your bank in your local currency, converted from US dollars.
Stripe Connect is the default. Wise is used in countries Stripe does not support, and Mercor picks the provider for you based on your bank's country. Mercor does not pay through PayPal, Payoneer or crypto.
Stripe holds your very first payout for seven days. After that, a standard Stripe payout is free and arrives within up to five business days, or you can pay a 1% fee for an instant payout where your bank supports it. With Wise, you get an email after each release and must accept the transfer.
Your bank account must be in your own legal name. Joint, business and family accounts fail Stripe's checks.

Work Trials, Bonuses and Referrals
A work trial is a paid assessment of about four to six hours. Mercor pays for one work trial per person, at a fixed amount shown on the offer, and payment needs a complete, good-faith submission but does not depend on being selected.
Bonuses, work-trial pay and referral payouts run on a separate schedule, with release windows on Wednesday and Friday. Every payment appears on the Earnings page, where you can filter by contract and download a PDF report.

Taxes and Contractor Status
Mercor work is contract work, not employment. Mercor offers no W-2 roles and does not deduct tax from your pay, so you handle your own taxes where you live.
US citizens and residents fill in a W-9 and may receive a 1099-NEC through Stripe. Everyone else fills in a W-8BEN and gets no US tax form. Mercor recommends a local accountant.

What Decides How Much Work You Get
Mercor ties future work to quality. Its pay policy says low-quality work stays paid but affects your future fit, and its offboarding page says late or heavily revised work can lead to a trial sprint and then the end of a contract.
Projects also end for reasons unrelated to you, such as completion, scope changes or budget. Mercor says that does not affect your standing, and your profile stays open for new offers.
Two habits help, both from Mercor's own pages. Answer the weekly availability survey that Mercor emails each Wednesday, and keep your skills and availability current so the matching system can find you.

What Contractors Say on Reddit
We read recent threads in r/mercor_ai on 2026-10-13. Trainers on Reddit raise the same few points.
- Weekly caps differ by project, and raising one has to be requested. Some say very long days attract extra checks.
- Hours are sometimes cut in the weekly review, and the first reply from support is an automated assistant. People who got answers asked for the case to go to a project lead.
- Offers can sit on paused with a zero-hour cap until the client sends work, and some are later withdrawn.
- Projects can end after months with little explanation.
Mercor confirms the support point. Emails to its support address are answered first by Melvin, an AI assistant that passes some cases to the human team. Keep your own record of hours and tasks from day one.
