Yes, SME Careers is real. It is the expert hiring site of SuperAnnotate, an AI training data company, and it pays through Deel every week. The big warning from trainers is pay: the rate on a listing is a ceiling, and some people are offered far less at onboarding, or wait months for a project.
Everything below comes from SME Careers' own site and help docs, read on 2026-10-12, plus a pass through the AI training subreddit the same day. DigiNo has no link with SME Careers and earns nothing from it.
Is SME Careers Legit?
The site is titled SME Careers by SuperAnnotate, and its footer says SME Careers connects subject matter experts with work for SuperAnnotate's AI clients. The copyright line names SME Solutions Inc.
SME Careers says SuperAnnotate is backed by NVIDIA Ventures, Databricks Ventures and Dell Technologies Capital, and that its experts come from more than 40 countries.
Check the address before you apply. The real site is sme.careers, with a dot. On 2026-10-12, smecareers.com did not lead to SME Careers at all.
The FAQ page on the main site reads like generic careers copy. The useful answers are in the help docs at docs.sme.careers, which is where most of this review comes from.

What the Work Looks Like
SME Careers recruits people with advanced degrees or hands-on expertise to train and test AI models. Its fields include sciences, languages, law, medicine, finance and the arts.
Once on a project, you work as an annotator, a QA reviewer or in another assigned role, inside SuperAnnotate's work platform, with project chat on Discord.
The jobs board listed 264 open roles on 2026-10-12. Every rate is shown as a maximum. Here is a spread of what the listings said:
| Role on SME Careers | Listed at |
|---|---|
| Legal and Compliance Specialist, Rubric Design (US) | Up to $120/hr |
| Healthcare Specialist, Rubric Design (US) | Up to $100/hr |
| Materials Scientist | Up to $95/hr |
| Physicist | Up to $70/hr |
| Norwegian Language Expert | Up to $55/hr |
| Customer Service Expert, AI Training (one regional listing) | Up to $20/hr |
| Assamese Language Expert | Up to $15/hr |
| Computer Vision QA Specialist (Bangladesh, India) | Up to $2.50/hr |
These are the ceilings the listings state, not what anyone will earn. Competition is heavy too: one customer service listing showed more than 1,800 applicants that month.

How Your Rate Is Set
This matters more than the listing. The help docs say your hourly rate is set by the SME Careers team, based on your experience, skills, location and market rates. You do not choose it.
Each project can also carry its own rate. You see it on the project invitation before you accept, and the docs say any later changes are increases.

How Applying Works
- Create an account with your email or LinkedIn, then upload your CV.
- Apply to open roles on the jobs board.
- Take the AI interview, a recorded video interview of about 15 minutes, usually in English. People make the final decision, and you get one retake only if it is offered.
- Pass screening. The team reviews your profile, and some roles add a call with a recruiter or a qualification exam.
- Onboard by signing a contractor agreement in Deel, verifying your ID there with a photo ID and a selfie, and linking Discord.
- Accept a project invitation before it expires, then pass the paid bootcamp to start real work.
The docs say onboarding makes you eligible for projects but does not guarantee one. Projects can also fill up, in which case you join a waitlist.

Time Tracking and Payouts
Hourly projects track your time with Insightful, a desktop app. Only active time counts. Idle time, social media, video sites and any AI tool your project does not allow are not paid.
The docs say random checks can look at screenshots, screen recordings and the sites you visited while the timer ran.
Pay runs weekly. Work from Monday to Sunday is paid through Deel the following Friday, and usually lands one to three days later.

What Trainers Say on Reddit
We read the SME Careers threads in r/AiTraining_Annotation from April to October 2026. The same complaints come up again and again.
- Offers far below the listing. One applicant passed the interview for a medical QA lead role listed at a high hourly rate, then was offered a few dollars an hour under a general data trainer title. Others say the same happened on language QA lead roles.
- Onboarded, contract signed, then months with no project and little reply on Discord or email.
- Bootcamp dashboards that stay inactive with no tasks.
- A few reports of hours left unpaid and disputes with no answer.
There are good reports too. Several people say they got a project, were paid hourly and found the work worthwhile, while noting the platform is less organized than others.
Before you click to request your Deel contract, check the rate shown on your onboarding page. If it does not match what you applied for, ask support first.
