Remote jobs for lawyers fall into three groups: remote or hybrid roles at firms and in-house teams, contract and project work, and AI training, where lawyers draft and grade legal work for AI models.
Most lawyers already have some flexibility. In a 2022 ABA survey of nearly 2,000 members, 87% said their workplace allowed remote work. This guide covers where the remote roles are, the ethics rules that travel with you, and how legal AI training work runs, using official pages and job ads read on 2026-10-13.
How Common Remote Work Is for Lawyers
The same ABA survey found big differences by setting.
- In private practice, nearly two-thirds could work fully remote or set their own schedule.
- In-house, more than half could work fully remote or set their own schedule.
- In government, only 32% were fully remote or set their own schedule.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics still describes the job as mostly office based, with travel to clients and court. About 11% of lawyers were self-employed in its latest count, and self-employed lawyers tend to have more control over their hours.

The Ethics Rules That Follow You Home
Two ABA ethics opinions cover remote practice. They are model guidance, not law, so your own state bar has the final word. This is a summary, not legal advice.
Formal Opinion 498 (March 2021) says the usual duties of competence, diligence, communication, confidentiality and supervision apply to virtual practice. It points to security updates, strong passwords, encryption, a VPN on public Wi-Fi and secure video tools.
Formal Opinion 495 (December 2020) says you may practice the law of the state where you are licensed while physically working in a state where you are not, as long as that state has not said otherwise and you do not hold yourself out as local. A local address or phone number on your website or letterhead could count as a local office.

Remote Legal Roles Worth Knowing
Remote and Hybrid Associate or In-House Roles
These are ordinary legal jobs with a remote setup. The survey numbers above show in-house and private practice lawyers have the most flexibility, and government lawyers the least.
Contract Lawyer Work
Solo practitioners and small firms bring in contract lawyers for specialized or occasional work, often through legal staffing companies, according to an ABA Journal report. For the contract lawyer it means flexible project work, plus experience and contacts.
Compliance Roles
Compliance officers write policies, run audits, train staff and investigate violations. BLS says a bachelor's degree is the usual entry point and that some employers prefer legal training, so a law degree carries over well.
Part-Time Teaching
BLS says part-time work is common for college teachers, and gives the example of a practicing lawyer or judge teaching an evening course at a law school.

Legal AI Training: The Newest Remote Option
AI labs pay lawyers to write and grade legal work so their models learn what good legal reasoning looks like. It is part-time, remote, project-based work, which is why many lawyers treat it as a side hustle.
Mercor keeps a standing listing for lawyers. On 2026-10-13 it described projects like these:
- Drafting a motion or brief from a fact pattern, plus the reference answer the AI's attempt is graded against.
- Grading AI-drafted contract and discovery work: does the provision do what it claims, is the privilege call right, does the citation support the point.
- Flagging where the AI states the law correctly but would still lose, given the forum, the standard of review or the facts.
Ethos ads for in-house counsel and contracts attorneys describe document work instead: contract redlines, due diligence memos, clause-risk analyses, NDA and vendor agreement review, negotiation summaries and renewal trackers.

Legal AI Training Roles Listed Now
| Role | Platform | Listed at | What the ad asks for | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legal Expert (J.D./LL.B.) | Mercor | $100 to $150/hr | A J.D., LL.B. or LL.M. and a current license to practice | Remote |
| Lawyers | Mercor | $70 to $110/hr | 4+ years in legal practice, 20+ hours a week | United States |
| In-House Counsel, Contracts Attorney | Ethos | $100/hr | 4+ years reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements | United States |
| Trademark Paralegal Manager | Ethos | $100/hr | Licensed attorney, 4+ years in trademark or copyright law | New York, NY |
These are the rates the ads state, not what anyone will earn. A listing is not a promise of work, and hours depend on the project.
The Ethos ads ask for 5 to 20 hours a week on your own schedule. The Mercor lawyer listing ran about four to six weeks and asked for 20 or more hours a week.

How Applying Works
On Mercor you apply with your resume, confirm where you work from and take an AI interview of about 20 minutes. Mercor says it then verifies your license and background and adds you to its legal pool. When a project needs your practice area, it invites matching lawyers to that project's listing.
The standing listing does not accept or reject anyone, so you will not get a decision on it. Mercor says a matching project can come within a week or take several months.
Ethos screens people with a recorded AI voice interview. Its privacy policy says AI tools write follow-up questions and help evaluate the interview, and that selection combines this with human review.

What Lawyers Say on Reddit
We read remote work and AI training threads in r/Lawyertalk up to 2026-10-13.
- Contract document review is still the most common remote fallback, but commenters say it pays poorly, and one well-upvoted reply expects AI to replace most of it soon.
- One licensed attorney with document review experience asked for help finding steady remote work, and the thread drew more than 90 replies.

Is AI Training Right for You as a Lawyer?
It suits lawyers who have done their own drafting and analysis recently and want part-time remote work alongside a practice or between roles. Mercor's listing says the firm name matters less than whether you did the work yourself.
It is a weaker fit if you need steady hours, since projects start and stop. New to the field? Read what an AI trainer does first.
