Introduction to this list of Travel Quotes

It seems like every other day there’s a new story of someone travelling the globe searching for their place in the burgeoning profession of teaching in online teaching jobs.

But sometimes, travelling can prove to be a little scary. Leaving behind all you’ve ever known is no small feat.

Those of you with experience teaching on platforms such as AmazingTalker know first hand how nerve-wracking it can be to decide to change your ‘work from home' job into a ‘work from wherever you lay your hat' job.

But you’ll also know just how much the benefits outweigh any butterflies you might feel.

So whether you’re considering taking up online teaching with Cambly Kids or with a different company, it’s always good to keep in mind a few pithy phrases to inspire or calm you when you start to worry.

Travel is one of those things that has captivated the hearts and minds of generations, from old timey explorers to modern day space-farers – everyone who’s ever been anywhere has got something to say about it.

    Travel Quotes

Let’s get started with some generic travel quotes before diving into more specific ones for specific situations. It’s always good to have a firm foundation before we start off.

    ‘Adventure is worthwhile’

    Aesop

From one of the most time-tested storytellers in the world, this pithy pearl of wisdom can be read as a simple statement of fact or as a deep and meaningful musing on life. I’ll let you decide.

‘Travelling… leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller’

    Ibn Battuta

While some authors, like Shakespeare, draw from their own imaginations or from previously established sources, many authors, like Tolkein, draw from places they’ve personally visited themselves.

‘The gladdest moment in human life… is a departure into unknown lands’

    Sir Richard Burton

When you decide to pursue teaching online with PalFish there’s a good chance you’re going to have to go somewhere you’ve never been before; somewhere inherently unknown. Luckily, you’ll be pleased to know Sir Richard thinks this is a good thing.

‘Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show’

    Unknown

When you’re travelling around the world, you’re going to have to travel light. Keep your stories alive in your head, and don’t weigh yourself down with knick-knacks you’ll have forgotten in a month. Here is a list of Digital Nomad Tools to pack.

‘I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world’

    Mary Anne Radmacher

It’s a rather poetic sentiment, but it makes you think… is it the act of travel that she’s talking about? Or is it the act of seeing something familiar from a different perspective? Read into it what you like – either way, it’s a compelling exposition.

    Travel With Friends

Lots of us get put off from travel by the notion of having to go somewhere alone. It’s scary.

So let’s face it – you’re probably going to want to go with some friends. If you’re pursuing online teaching with Allschool this isn’t always possible, but there are various communities available for you to meet people similar to yourself, and ensure you’re travelling with good company.

‘Life was meant for good friends and great adventures’

    Unknown

This phrase is unattributed, but when you’re travelling and teaching online with Preply it’s worth keeping in mind. it’s the people that make a place, not the bricks and mortar.

‘There is an unspoken bond you create with the friends you travel with’

    Kristen Sarah

Travelling with friends makes the experience that much sweeter. When you’re faced problems together, everything else you encounter together seems that much simpler.

‘A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles’

    Tim Cahill

A lot of people pick up friends in the places they visit. Tim reckons this is what makes the journey worth doing. You don’t have to agree with him, but it’s a thought worth entertaining. However, your idea of of perfect travel might be one that has great convenience. If this is the case for you, you could look into a private jet card as a way to save on luxury travel so that, even if you are travelling a long distance, you will be comfortable while doing so.  There are many different ways to enjoy the art of travel.

‘I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them’

    Mark Twain

It’s the difference between ‘an experience of a life time’ and ‘stuck in a car with a bore’. One way or another, you’re going to know how you feel about this person by the time you get where you’re going.

‘Never go on trips with anyone you do not love’

    Ernest Hemingway

Opposed to Twain’s expression above, Hemingway suggests you’d be better off loving the person you’re travelling with before you set off; and if you come back not loving them any more? Well, then I guess you’re more a Mark than an Ernest.

    Safe Travel Quotes

Travelling across the world is scary. There’s no two ways about it. It’s nerve-wracking and anyone unfazed by it must surely be a sociopath. But, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.

Much is made of the potential dangers of travel – but you’re more likely to die in your own kitchen than you are anywhere else. I mean, there’s lots of reasons why that’s true… don’t read into that too much… but still, the point stands…

‘No place is ever as bad as they tell you it’s going to be’

    Chuck Thompson

If you tell your mother you’re going a couple hours down the road she’s probably going to worry. Don’t let another person’s stress stop you from experiencing things yourself.

‘If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine, it’s lethal’

    Paulo Coelho

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? You’re going to grow old and die any way, but you get to choose whether you spent 60 years living or 60 years in an office cubicle. Not that there’s anything wrong with office work… If you love it, good for you. If you don’t, then you could consider side hustles from home as a way to fund your travels. Luckily, I know where you can find some inspiring quotes if you can’t make up your mind.

‘The world is waiting for you. Good Luck. Travel Safe. Go!’

    Phil Keoghan

I think a big part of travelling safe is actually travelling smart. Should I stay in a hostel with a murder rate that rivals that of a Columbian drug cartel? No. Probably not. Be clever about it.

‘Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore’

    Andre Gide

You have to be brave when you’re thinking about doing something new. There’s always reasons not to do something, but you have to be prepared to embrace the opportunity.

‘A ship in a harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for’

    John A. Shedd

We touched on this with the office cubicle. You’re not supposed to vegetate in a desk chair. Go fill your lungs with air; and if that air happens to come from a different country to the one you were born in, then good for you, you go-getter.

    Travel Together Quotes

Travelling with company is a good way to set those nerves at ease; and also the nerves of the people who care about you, and are probably stressing you out with their stressing out.

‘Actually, the best gift you could have given her was a lifetime of adventures’

    Lewis Carroll

Rather than seeing it as going somewhere with someone, this quote encourages you to look at it as someone getting to go somewhere with you. It’s a shifting of the agency, making THEM the one that’s lucky to come with YOU.

‘It doesn’t matter where you are going, it’s who you have beside you’

    Unknown

You can walk through hell with someone who has you laughing all the way.

‘No road is long with good company’

    Turkish proverb

When you’re travelling the world, you’re going to encounter long and boring roads that’ll drain your energy reserves. Figurative roads, I mean, as opposed to literal ones. I guess it depends where you’re travelling… either way, bring someone with you to lighten the existential (or literal) load.

‘Go the distance, couples who travel together are more likely to stay together and feel more connected’

    Unknown

A lot of you may be considering travelling with a romantic partner. This unattributed quotation says travel will help you stay together. Twain said it’ll help you decide if you hate each other or not. One of them is probably right…

‘I get a friend to travel with me… I need somebody to bring me back to who I am. It’s hard to be alone’

    Leonardo DiCaprio

When you’re a super famous movie star it’s probably difficult to just be a normal person. DiCaprio here says he brings a friend along to help him do just that. If you’re reading this then you’re PROBABLY not a movie star, but either way it’s a good thing to keep in mind. If you ARE a movie star then can you give Scarlett Johansson my number? Thanks.

    Travel Partner Quotes

Often who you take with you is the first thing we consider when approaching a trip. It’s natural. We want to know someone’s going to have our back if it doesn’t quite go to plan. Teaching online in other countries rarely affords this kind of safety net, I’m afraid – but if you can do it, then why not?

‘Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking together in the same direction’

    Antoine Desaint-Exupery

Perhaps more poetry than genuine life advice, but it’s a nice sentiment. Find someone to move forwards with you and then maybe you won’t be so scared of each incremental step.

‘Our goal is to run out of pages in our passports’

    Unknown

This unattributed quote is another poetic expression of a couple’s love. But can we look past that to find something useful for our purposes? Of course we can. It’s an expression of the desire to travel, to see new things and new places. It’s about living a life many of us don’t have. Also a passport on average only has 28 pages… so that’s actually quite manageable, really…

Will you come to travel with me? Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?’

    Walt Whitman

There’s nothing quite as frightening as having to say ‘no’ to someone who’s asked you to come travelling with them, but you don’t like them or really want to spend any more time with them than you absolutely have to… but, being asked by someone whose company you adore is next to none.

‘Here’s to all the places we went. And here’s to all the places we’ll go’

    John Green

This one expresses an idea of not just having BEEN places but continuing to GO places. It’s mid-adventure, and is a nice affirmation that you’re not going to get sick of it half way through.

‘Take that person and travel around the world. Buy a plane ticket for the two of you to travel all around the world and go to places that are hard to get to and hard to get out of. And when you come back… and if you’re still in love with that person… get married at the airport’

    Bill Murray

This focuses rather more on the difficulties of travel, and the benefits of having someone to get through it with. It’s a lovely sentiment though.

    Enjoy Life Quotes

Life is something to be enjoyed, and spending time in another country is a great way to do that, while taking advantage of the flexibility of teach from home jobs. These quotes will help you to accept that maybe, just maybe, this might be something worth doing.

‘The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience’

    Eleanor Roosevelt

This idea of ever-striving to achieve more than you have is possibly the most quintessential American philosophy you’ll ever hear. Not just to have and to keep, but to experience as well.

‘Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all’

    Helen Keller

A little black and white for my tastes but I’m sure you can see what she means. If you’re trying to teach online with Preply from the spare bedroom of your parents’ house you’re probably going to struggle – but if you take the leap and travel you might just make a little money out of it.

‘Don’t exist. Live. Get out, explore. Thrive’

    Brian Krans

Listen to Brian. Go out there and start doing things. Stop wasting your life doing nothing. You’re still young, it’s not too late to start again. Sorry, my internal monologue was bleeding into my keyboard there…

‘Do anything, but let it produce joy’

    Walt Whitman

It’s not Walt Whitman’s first appearance on this list, and his second appearance is just as exciting as his first. It’s always good to see him. But more importantly, it’s always good to think abut what he has to say, and decide whether or not it’s something we want to incorporate into our own lives.

‘We’re so busy watching out for what’s just ahead of us that we don’t take time to enjoy where we are’

    Bill Watterson

I think this is something that’s often expressed by travellers. You’re so busy worrying about what come next (usually because it’s expensive) that you don’t take account of where you are now. If you’re currently sat in that office cubicle we were talking about then I’ll understand if you don’t want to take the time to enjoy where you are. You’ve probably got work to do. But when you clock out tonight, go home and take time to enjoy where you are. You might like it.

    Funny Travel Quotes

So a lot of the quotations we’ve seen so far have been pretty ‘heavy’. But they don’t have to be. There are plenty out there who can turn a phrase with a smile on their face.

‘People don’t take trips – trips take people’

    John Steinbeck

I like this idea, because it suggests that a good trip will change you. It takes you and gives you back different to how it found you.  Hopefully it’ll give you back BETTER than it found you. Ideally.

‘The worst thing about being a tourist is having other tourists recognise you as a tourist’

    Russell Baker

You lock eyes across the crowded square, a silent acknowledgement passing between the two of you. A clueless expression practically screaming to the world ‘I don’t know where I am’. You see it mirrored on the face across the crowd and you think to yourself ‘ha, they’re lost too’.

‘I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list’

    Susan Sontag

I heard somewhere that a passport has 28 pages you can fill, so get going, Susan – you’ve got paper to ink.

‘Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon’

    Paul Brandt

There’s no wind on the moon so I guess those footprints are always going to be there. There’s also no oxygen, so I reckon the sky probably SHOULD be the limit of your expectations. Also, who would you teach while you were up there? I bet the wi fi is terrible.

‘I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read on the train’

    Oscar Wilde

It’s a good idea to keep a diary of your travels so you can keep track of all the cool things you’ve seen. Or if you don’t like the word ‘diary’ try ‘journal’ instead. Of course, as an online teacher you’re going to need to have a teacher planner. Luckily, we’ve got just the kind of list you might find helpful.

    Short Travel Quotes

You’re a busy person and you’ve not got time for long sentences. You barely managed to get through that one. So here’s short ones. Enjoy.

‘Jobs fill your pocket, adventures fill your soul’

    Jaime Lyn Beatty

How long does a job last? I guess it depends on the job… But, how long does your soul last? Well I guess it depends on your theological school of thinking… But most of them say ‘forever’. So that’s a pretty simple equation to weigh up there.

‘Freedom. Only those deprived of it know what it really is’

    Timothy Cavendish

Throw off the shackles of your office cubicle and look into Online Communication Coaching with Excedo. Online jobs can create a lot more freedom, so have a quick read about it on the train home. If you drive home then please wait until you’re safely parked before you checking them out.

‘If it scares you, it may be a good thing to try’

    Seth Godin

A lot of people apply this mode of thinking to various aspects of life. A lot of people are scared of things like clowns though… But if you’re scared of travelling then maybe the best way to get over that is to find a friend and give it a go?

‘The biggest risk in life is not taking one’

    Barfi

I once walked down quite a steep flight of stairs backwards. Personally I think that was a bigger risk than having chosen to NOT take that risk… but I think I see where Barfi is coming from. You don’t want to wake up 60 or 70 or 80 (I don’t know how old you are) years from now and be hit by the sudden realisation that you never walked down quite a steep flight of stairs backwards. I think that’s what they’re saying, right?

‘To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all’

    Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde is back on our list with another pithy remark about living your life better. It’s worth keeping in mind, especially if you’re thinking about travel. If you’ve got nothing to lose then it’s easier to make that jump.

    Best Travel Quotes

If you’re looking to quickly digest some of the best travel quotes we have, then this is your one-stop-shop for just such a thing.

‘Travel is never a matter of money but of courage’

    Paulo Coelho

Yeah, but it is ALSO a matter of money… just ask anyone who’s never had any. If you’re looking to teach online and travel though, you’ll offset some of that expenditure by earning some cash on-the-go.

‘Wherever you go, go with all your heart’

    Confucius

This is an important idea to remember. You have to commit. Don’t half-ass it or you’ll get nowhere.

‘With age, comes wisdom. With travel, comes understanding’

    Sandra lake

Perhaps a matter of semantics, but it’s worth considering all the same. You’ll understand things better if you’ve been there and seen them with your own eyes.

‘It is not down in any map; true places never are”

    Herman Melville

It’s when you go off the beaten track that you find things you’re not expecting. Just be careful WHERE you go off the beaten track. Don’t do it around cliffs or sketchy neighbourhoods.

‘The journey not the arrival matters’

    T.S. Eliot

A terrible journey can make a place not worth seeing. I remember Ricky Gervais telling Karl Pilkington that an Aztec city was accessible via a 15 hour trek through a jungle with machetes. To which Karl said ‘well that’s not accessible then, is it?’ and I think he’s totally right. 15 hours through a jungle chopping vines to see where something impressive USED to be… no thanks. Having a friend with you makes the journey all the better, and the destination all the sweeter.

    Travel Quotes

    Travel the World Quotes

Travelling the world is reputed to be something that changes a person forever. I guess it depends how you do it. However, you do it, yours will be authentic as its your experience.

‘Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness., and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts’

    Mark Twain

Mark Twain is back, with a comment on society which could well have been written this morning. Travel around, particularly teaching, and you won’t be able to hold on to those provincial precepts any more.

‘The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes’

    Marcel Proust

If this comment came from a deranged, disgraced surgeon who’d trapped you in a haunted house, it wouldn’t be out of place in a horror movie… but I don’t think he means it that way…

‘The gladdest moment in human life is a departure into unknown lands’

    Sir Richard Burton

Going somewhere you haven’t been before is always a great feeling. When you’re travelling and teaching online you’re going to encounter a lot of places you’ve not visited before. Well, assuming you’re doing it properly. If you go set up shop in your nearest supermarket then you’re likely doing it wrong. Not really in the spirit of ‘travel’, is it?

‘Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world’

    Gustav Flaubert

You’re not special. I mean, you’re special; but you’re not SPECIAL. You know what I mean. Like, you’re cool and all, but you don’t matter. Wait, no, I’m not saying you don’t matter, I’m just saying like, on a greater scale you literally make no difference to anything. I’m going to stop.

‘All you need to know is that it’s possible’

    Wolf, an Appalachian Trail Hiker

I don’t know if Wolf is his real name, but I hope it is. Or if it’s a nickname I hope he didn’t give it to himself, because that would be really sad. To be fair that does sound like the kind of name someone would give themselves if their real name was something like Sylvester or Daryl. Either way, what he’s saying is pretty cool. God, I hope he’s really called Wolf.

    Travel Alone Quotes

The world is made up of lots of different people. We’re everywhere; and some of us want you to leave us the hell alone. We don’t have to like you. You can’t make us. When we travel we go off on our own because it’s quieter, and you don’t get to bother us with your constant talking and breathing and eating and just being irritating. Leave us alone. I came out here to listen to the birds and the wind in the tress, not to find out how your divorce is going, Marjory.

‘Travel only with thy equals or thy betters; if there are none, travel alone’

    The Dhammapada

A lot of quotes in this list are about finding people to travel with. I like this one because it’s like ‘nah, you’re fine as you are’.

‘When you’re travelling with someone else, you share each discovery, but when you are alone, you have to carry each experience with you like a secret, something you have to write on your heart, because there’s no other way to preserve it’

    Shauna Niequist

Not everything needs to be shared. It doesn’t have to be written down, it doesn’t have to be Tweeted, it doesn’t have to be packaged up and taken home – sometimes you can just experience something, and it be beautiful.

‘You are the one that possesses the keys to your being. You carry the passport to your own happiness’

    Diane von Furstenberg

I feel like we’ve devoted a disproportionate amount of this list to talking about passports…

‘Some journeys in life can only be travelled alone’

    Ken Poirot

You are the arbiter of your own experience. You decide where you go and what you do. Bring someone along if you want, but when they start deciding what you do it stops being YOUR trip.

‘I had chosen to leave, and live alone in a foreign country. And in fleeing thousands of miles across the Pacific, I chose myself, and a chance at a different future’

    Alison Singh Gee

I think this is something that’s going to resonate a lot with those thinking about exploring online side hustles to make money. You might have to go far away. It’s scary. But in doing so, you’re choosing YOURSELF.
