Mental health AI trainer jobs pay therapists, counselors, psychologists and social workers to judge how AI models handle emotional and clinical conversations. The work is remote, and some roles value a clinical license without requiring one.
Below is why AI labs want this expertise, what the listings open on 2026-10-13 asked for, and how this fits alongside clinical work.
Why AI Labs Hire Mental Health Professionals
People already use chatbots for mental health support. The American Psychological Association's November 2025 health advisory says millions of people are turning to general-purpose AI chatbots and wellness apps for unmet mental health needs, and that most of these tools were not designed to provide clinical feedback or treatment.
The advisory asks developers to build in safeguards that detect and interrupt harmful conversations, such as those involving self-harm. It calls this a clinical safety issue that needs psychologists involved throughout development, and it asks developers to stop any AI from presenting itself as a licensed professional.
The listings below ask for that judgment directly: whether a model's reply is appropriate, neutral and safe.

What the Work Involves
The mental health listings on Mercor‘s public feed describe these tasks:
- Reviewing conversations between people and AI models about relationships, family, emotional wellbeing and personal beliefs, and judging whether each response is appropriate, neutral and safe.
- Spotting patterns such as excessive agreement, taking sides, reinforcing distorted beliefs, moralizing, or the model overstepping into clinical advice.
- Writing rubrics, guidelines and reference responses that show what a balanced, supportive reply looks like.
- Designing test conversations that probe how a model handles sensitive topics.
- Comparing pairs of simulated clinical conversations and choosing the one that is more realistic.
One behavioral health listing asks for working familiarity with sycophancy, cognitive distortions, healthy boundaries and client-centered approaches such as motivational interviewing.

Who Qualifies
The two mental health listings set different bars:
- The behavioral health expert role asks for a degree in psychology, counseling, social work, behavioral health or a related field, or equivalent experience, plus 3 or more years supporting people in a mental health, counseling or social services setting. It lists therapists, counselors, clinical social workers, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, case managers, crisis counselors and peer support specialists, and says licensure such as LMFT, LCSW, LPC, LMHC, PsyD or PhD is valued but not required.
- The clinical conversation evaluation role asks for a relevant degree or qualification plus practical experience in a clinical mental health setting. It names clinical and counseling psychology, mental health counseling, clinical social work, psychiatry, psychotherapy and marriage and family therapy.
A standing listing for health professionals also includes mental health, naming psychiatry and clinical psychology.

What Therapists on Reddit Say
Therapists are split on this work. In an October 2026 r/therapists thread about AI training jobs, some said they would never take one because they see it as helping companies replace clinicians. Another, who had seen the listings, described the work as building rubrics for how a model should respond to different themes. Others said they had never come across these roles.
Privacy comes up in almost every AI thread there. Therapists worry about client data reaching AI tools, which is one more reason to keep real client details out of any task.

Keep Client Information Out of Your Work
Some tasks ask you to write realistic scenarios. Base them on your experience, never on a client someone could recognize. Under HIPAA's Safe Harbor method, de-identified health information has 18 types of identifiers removed, including names, places smaller than a state and dates more specific than the year. This is not legal advice.

Other Remote Work for Mental Health Professionals
Demand for counselors is growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 533,400 substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselor jobs in 2025 and projects 18% growth from 2025 to 2035. It counted 209,400 psychologist jobs, and says psychologists are licensed in every state for clinical and counseling work.
Counselors who want to see clients in other states have a newer option. The Counseling Compact lets licensed professional counselors who live in one member state get a privilege to practice in others. As of its 2026-10-01 update, it was live for licensees in Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wyoming.
