AI writing jobs pay writers and editors to judge and fix what AI models write. You rate responses, rewrite weak ones, write prompts and model answers, and explain your calls in plain English. You are not writing articles for clients.
Everything below was read on 2026-10-13 from the platforms' own pages and public listings. I do AI training work myself, and the best-listed writing role we found asked for four or more years in news.
What AI Writing Work Looks Like
The listings describe the same handful of tasks:
- Rating AI responses for accuracy, tone and whether they answer the question.
- Comparing two or more AI responses and ranking them.
- Editing or rewriting a response until it meets a professional standard.
- Writing a hard prompt and the correct reference response a model is graded against.
- Annotating text for grammar, meaning and style, and flagging model errors.
Mindrift's writing project page says you evaluate and improve how AI models write, and you do not produce content for clients.

Who Gets Hired for AI Writing Jobs
Professional writing experience is the common thread. The roles split into three rough groups.
Journalists and Professional Writers
Mercor had a listing for news analysts, reporters and journalists on the day we checked. It asks for 4 or more years in a news role, 20 or more hours a week and strong written English, and it is open to US residents only.
Mindrift says its writing projects are built for people with experience in content creation, journalism, copywriting, technical writing or literary editing.
Editors, Proofreaders and Linguists
Mercor's English Language and Literature Expert listing asks for native or near-native English and professional experience in editing, proofreading, writing or language evaluation.
Humanities Graduates
Mercor's Humanities Expert pool covers history, classics, philosophy, literature and religious studies. It asks for a graduate degree in the field or equivalent scholarly or professional experience, and the work is grading how well AI reads sources and builds an argument.
Generalists
Some platforms hire generalists with no degree, where careful reading and clear writing are the whole job. DataAnnotation's Generalist role and Alignerr's Generalist and Prompt Writer roles are in this group. Outlier, run by Scale AI, says you need at least an associate degree.

Where AI Writing Jobs Are Listed
These are the writing roles we found with a rate on the listing itself, on 2026-10-13. They are listed rates, not what anyone will earn, and projects open and close often.
| Platform | Writing role | Listed at |
|---|---|---|
| Mercor | News Analysts, Reporters, and Journalists (US) | $70-110/hr |
| Mercor | English Language and Literature Expert | $50/hr |
| Mercor | Humanities Expert | $45-60/hr |
| Alignerr | Prompt Writer | $40-120/hr |
| Alignerr | Visual Storytelling Prompt Writer | $40-120/hr |
| Mindrift | Writing and editing projects | Up to $30/hr |
| DataAnnotation | Generalist | Up to $25-50/hr |
A few things the listings say that are easy to miss:
- Mindrift's writing page said the domain was quiet for now, with general tasks open while you wait for a writing project.
- Mercor's journalist project runs about 4 to 6 weeks, and the first task is paid per task before hourly pay starts.
- Mercor's Humanities listing is a standing pool. You get matched to a project when one opens, and you get no decision on the pool listing itself.
- Of the 286 listings on Mercor's public feed that day, only one was titled for writers or journalists. Most writing-adjacent work sat under humanities and language roles.

How to Get In as a Writer
- Lead your resume with paid writing or editing work: publications, clients, years, and the type of writing.
- Apply to roles that match your background, such as journalism, editing or a humanities field, before generalist roles.
- Expect a screen. Mercor uses an AI interview of about 20 minutes, and Outlier runs skill screenings and an ID check during an onboarding of 30 to 90 minutes.
- Practice the core task. Write a prompt, write the ideal response, and explain in a few lines why one response beats another.
- Keep a record of every task and hour from your first day.
Our guide step on writing AI prompts and ideal responses walks through that core task.

What Writers Say on Reddit
We read writing threads in the Outlier subreddit from April to September 2026. The advice is practical.
- Keep your written justifications neutral and plain. Trainers warn against sarcasm, flattery, stock AI phrases and academic jargon where plain English works.
- On comparison tasks, say clearly and briefly why one response beats the other on each rubric point.
- Be wary of someone messaging you about a specific writing role. Trainers say to sign up on the platform's own site instead.
- Treat it as gig work. Trainers say projects come and go, so it rarely works as a main income.

Is AI Writing Work Worth It for You?
It suits writers who like editing more than drafting, and who can explain a judgment in two clear sentences. It is project work, so treat it as a side income that comes and goes.
