A CDI specialist makes sure a patient's medical record says exactly what happened, so the diagnoses, severity and care are captured accurately.
CDI stands for clinical documentation integrity, also called clinical documentation improvement. Most CDI programs now work fully or partly remote, and the same skills are now asked for in clinical AI work.

What a CDI Specialist Does
- Reviews records while the patient is still in hospital (concurrent review) or after discharge and before billing (retrospective review).
- Queries physicians when documentation is unclear or deficient.
- Checks that every condition and treatment is documented, so the record shows how sick the patient really was.
- Educates busy physicians on documentation requirements.
ACDIS describes the role as the bridge between health information management and clinical staff, working within Medicare and private payer rules. Clinical knowledge is the trait it rates most important.

Remote CDI Work
CDI went remote fast and stayed there. In the ACDIS 2022 CDI Week industry survey, about 13% of respondents were fully remote before the pandemic. Afterward, about 62% said their program was still fully remote and about 32% ran a hybrid program, leaving fewer than 6% fully on site.

Where CDI Skills Are in Demand Now: AI Training
Healthcare AI companies are building tools that draft and summarize clinical notes, and they hire documentation experts to check the output.
On 2026-10-08, the public feed on Mercor listed a remote, hourly role for certified medical coders to review clinical documentation and AI-generated notes. It asked for at least one of CCDS, CHC, CCS or CPC, plus ICD-10 coding experience and a second language at an advanced (C1) level. Physician roles in the same feed review inpatient notes and discharge summaries written by AI.
