Data annotation jobs pay people to label, rate and correct the data that AI models learn from. Today most of that work is judging chatbot responses, writing prompts, checking facts and reviewing code, done remotely as an independent contractor.
This guide covers what the work looks like, who gets hired, and which platforms list it. Every platform fact below comes from that platform's own pages, read on 2026-10-13, plus a pass through the subreddits where annotators talk.
What Data Annotation Jobs Involve
The name comes from labeling images and text, and that work still exists. The bigger share now is feedback on AI output.
- Judging chatbot responses for accuracy and helpfulness, often by comparing two and picking the better one.
- Flagging factual errors and checking claims against sources.
- Writing hard prompts in your field, then writing the correct response.
- Reviewing AI-written code for bugs.
- Rating search results, labeling content, transcribing audio and recording short videos.
DataAnnotation lists most of the first four in its FAQ. Mindrift lists search relevance rating, content labeling and short video recording. Outlier says its contributors write prompts, rank outputs and improve responses, and that projects may not always match your field.

The Kinds of Roles You Will See
Listings are split by skill. On DataAnnotation's job board on the day we checked, roles ran from Generalist and language specialists in Spanish, Hindi and Arabic to Software Engineer, Attorney, Physician, Nurse and Chemist.
DataAnnotation's FAQ lists a starting rate for each track. These are the platform's listed figures, not what any one person will make.
| Track on DataAnnotation | Listed at |
|---|---|
| General | Starting at $25-$50+ per hour |
| Multilingual | Starting at $20+ per hour |
| Coding | Starting at $40-$150+ per hour |
| STEM | Starting at $40-$125+ per hour |
| Professional (law, finance, medicine) | Starting at $40-$125+ per hour |
The same FAQ quotes lower figures for general and coding work in another answer, so treat the table as a range the platform publishes, and check the rate on each project before you start.

Who Gets Hired
Requirements differ by platform and by track. Here is what the platforms themselves say.
- DataAnnotation asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent real-world experience for general work, plus fluent English and reliable internet. Its Generalist listing says no degree is required, so the two pages do not fully agree.
- DataAnnotation's higher tracks ask for more: native fluency in a second language, programming experience, a master's or PhD in a science, or credentials in law, finance or medicine.
- Outlier asks for at least an associate degree, and some projects need a bachelor's, master's or PhD.
- Handshake AI takes open applications from people based in the US with a work authorization it can support; outside the US it is invite-only.
- Mindrift lets new members start on tasks open to everyone, then pass qualifications for specialized projects.

Where to Find Data Annotation Jobs
Job boards repost these roles, but you apply on the platform itself. These are the ones we checked.
| Platform | Best for | How you get in |
|---|---|---|
| Mercor | Professionals and experts | Browse roles, then a role-specific AI interview of about 20 minutes |
| Ethos | Experienced professionals aged 18 or over | Profile and project screening; projects include review and annotation |
| DataAnnotation | Generalists and specialists with strong English | One Starter Assessment per track, no retakes |
| Outlier | People with at least an associate degree | Skill screenings and an ID check, 30 to 90 minutes |
| Alignerr | Specialists applying to listed jobs | Resume, ID check, some jobs add an interview or test |
| Mindrift | Beginners who want open tasks first | Sign up, then qualifications for specialized projects |
| OneForma | Language speakers in 100+ countries | Five-minute profile, no resume |
| CrowdGen by Appen | Domain experts without a tech background | Apply, then a qualification for most projects |
Mercor lets you browse roles before you make an account and pays hourly contractors every Wednesday through Stripe or Wise. Ethos matches professionals to client projects that can include calls, surveys, written reports and annotation, and you can turn down any project without a penalty.

How to Spot a Fake Listing
- Real platforms do not charge you to join. DataAnnotation's FAQ says it will never ask you for money for anything.
- Identity checks happen inside the platform, through a named provider. DataAnnotation and Alignerr both use Persona.
- Be careful with projects that ask you to buy software first. One Outlier contributor on Reddit says they were suspended soon after paying for the AI subscriptions a project required.
- Apply on the platform's own site, not through someone offering access by DM.
Our guide on how to tell real AI training jobs from scams goes through the warning signs step by step.

What Annotators on Reddit Say
We read recent threads in r/DataAnnotationTech, r/outlier_ai and r/AiTraining_Annotation on 2026-10-13. A few points came up again and again.
- Many platforms ask for an unpaid test or AI interview, and some never reply afterwards.
- Work comes in batches. Queues go empty for days, and qualifications can vanish from a dashboard when a project ends.
- Onboarding and calibration on some projects take several hours before the paid tasks start.
- People who stay busy are usually on two or three platforms at once.
