AI Evaluator and AI Rater Jobs: What They Are and Who Hires

AI evaluator and AI rater jobs in 2026, covering what the work is, 5 hiring requirements from real listings, listed pay by platform, and how to prepare.

AI evaluator and AI rater jobs pay people to judge what an AI model writes: is the response correct, does it follow the instruction, is it safe, and which of two responses is better. The titles differ by platform, but the work is the same core task. Most listings on 2026-10-13 were remote contract roles, and the better-paid ones asked for real experience in a field.

This page covers what the work is, who gets hired, what the listings show for pay, and how to prepare. Everything comes from the platforms' own listings and from published research, checked on 2026-10-13.

What an AI Evaluator Does

An AI evaluator reads a prompt and the model's response, then grades the response against a written set of rules. Some tasks ask for a score. Others ask you to compare two or more responses and say which is better and why.

Mercor‘s standing generalist listing describes the grading side plainly. It asks evaluators to check:

  • Whether the response is correct.
  • Whether it follows the instruction actually given.
  • Whether it is complete without padding.
  • Where the model is confidently wrong or contradicts itself.

Comparison tasks are just as common. A Mercor mental health listing on 2026-10-13 asked clinicians to review pairs of simulated conversations and pick the one that felt more like a real clinical session.

This is the same method the published research describes. In the InstructGPT paper, about 40 contractors ranked between 4 and 9 model outputs for each prompt. In Anthropic's 2022 paper, crowdworkers chatted with a model and picked the better of two responses at every turn.

AI Evaluator or AI Rater: What the Titles Mean

The job titles change from one company to the next. On 2026-10-13 the listings used:

  • AI Linguistic Evaluator, Speech AI Evaluation Specialist and Search Engine Evaluator at RWS TrainAI.
  • AI Evaluation Specialist at Handshake.
  • Titles ending in AI Evaluation or Model Evaluation at Mercor, such as Clinical Mental Health Expert, AI Conversation Evaluation.
  • Expert roles at Ethos, whose ads ask professionals to create, evaluate and refine AI-written documents, spreadsheets and slide decks.

Search engine rating is an older cousin of this work. Google says its external Search Quality Raters judge how well results meet a search, and compare two sets of results side by side. Google also says these ratings do not directly change rankings; they measure quality.

Who Gets Hired

Entry requirements range from a language and a degree to years of professional practice. Here is what listings asked for on 2026-10-13:

  • RWS language evaluator roles asked for native-level fluency, plus a degree in linguistics, translation or a related field, or at least three years of language work.
  • Mercor's clinical evaluation role asked for a mental health degree or qualification and hands-on clinical experience.
  • Mercor's AI Safety Practitioner role asked for a degree and five or more years in a field such as trust and safety, journalism, public policy or research.
  • Ethos ads asked for four or five years in a field such as teaching, HR or nonprofit work.
  • Handshake's program takes US-based applicants with work authorization it can support.

Mercor's generalist listing is the most open. It says no particular credential is required, and that careful reading and the ability to explain your reasoning matter most.

What AI Evaluator Jobs List as Pay

Pay depends on the field and the country. These are the rates the platforms listed on 2026-10-13. They are listed rates, not earnings, and hours depend on the project.

MercorAI Safety Practitioner$60 to $70 an hour
MercorBehavioral Health Expert, AI Safety and Model Evaluation (US)$45 to $70 an hour

What Raters Say About the Work

Getting the first role is the hard part, according to trainers on Reddit. One person who applied to several platforms for rater and evaluation work found that some projects had already ended.

A US trainer with experience could not find a general rater opening on one platform's careers page and asked others which specialist role to try instead.

Another spent six weeks applying across annotation and evaluation roles and heard mostly silence. Commenters said that is normal. Generalist rater roles draw heavy competition, and specialist roles often want five or more years of experience plus a degree.

Trainers also suggest applying to more than one platform, since a single project can end without much notice.

How to Prepare for an AI Evaluator Job

The skill being tested is judgment you can explain. These steps come from the research above and from DigiNo's free guide.

  1. Learn how rating and ranking tasks work. Step 7 of the guide, How to Rate and Rank AI Responses, walks through scales, side-by-side comparisons and common mistakes.
  2. Practice writing the reason behind each score. Most listings say the work involves explaining your reasoning, and step 8, Write Justifications That Pass Review, shows what reviewers look for.
  3. Expect disagreement and follow the project rules. Even in the InstructGPT study, trained labelers agreed with each other only about 73 percent of the time, and Anthropic reported about 63 percent agreement between its researchers and crowdworkers.
  4. Build your profile around the field you know. Specialist listings asked for degrees and years of practice, so lead with them. See Build a Profile That Gets Accepted.
  5. Prepare for an AI interview. Mercor uses an AI interviewer of about 20 minutes and offers a free practice interview, and Ethos uses a recorded voice interview.
