RLHF jobs are AI training roles where people compare, rank and rate an AI model's responses, and sometimes write the ideal response themselves. RLHF stands for reinforcement learning from human feedback. Your judgments teach the model which kind of response people prefer. Few listings use RLHF as the job title, so the work usually hides under names like AI evaluator, AI tutor or AI safety expert.
This page explains what the human side of RLHF involves, who hires for it, what listings show for pay, and how to prepare. It draws on the research papers that introduced the method and on listings checked on 2026-10-13.
What RLHF Is, in Plain Terms
The 2022 InstructGPT paper by Long Ouyang and colleagues describes the method in three steps:
- People write examples of good responses, and the model is trained on them.
- People rank several model responses to the same prompt, and a second model, called a reward model, learns to predict those rankings.
- The main model is trained with reinforcement learning to produce responses the reward model scores highly.
The result surprised people. In the paper's human evaluations, outputs from a 1.3 billion parameter model trained this way were preferred to outputs from the 175 billion parameter GPT-3, a model more than 100 times larger.
Hugging Face explains why people rank instead of giving scores. Different people's scores are uncalibrated and noisy, while comparing outputs side by side gives a more reliable signal.

What You Do in an RLHF Job
The human tasks map straight onto the steps above.
- Write prompts and ideal responses. These are the demonstrations in step one.
- Compare and rank responses. In the InstructGPT study, labelers ranked between 4 and 9 responses per prompt.
- Pick the better of two responses during a conversation. Anthropic's crowdworkers chatted with a model and chose between two replies at every turn.
- Red-team the model. In Anthropic's harmlessness data, workers tried to get harmful replies and picked the more harmful of two responses, so the model could learn what to avoid.
- Explain your choice. Platforms want the reason behind a ranking, in writing.
DigiNo's free guide covers each task. Step 7 is How to Rate and Rank AI Responses, step 8 is Write Justifications That Pass Review, and step 9 is Write Prompts and Ideal Responses.

Who Hires People for RLHF Work
The labs mostly hire through contractor platforms. The InstructGPT team hired about 40 contractors through Upwork and Scale AI, screened on how well they handled sensitive content and how often they agreed with the researchers. Anthropic used Amazon Mechanical Turk and Upwork.
Today the same work runs through AI training platforms. On 2026-10-13, 13 Mercor listings mentioned RLHF in the description. Most were AI safety roles that ask for experience in trust and safety, security, research or a related field, often with a second language.
Expert networks hire for the same judgment under other names. Ethos ads ask professionals to create, evaluate and refine AI-written work in their own field, which is the demonstration and comparison work described above.

What RLHF Jobs List as Pay
These Mercor listings named RLHF in their description on 2026-10-13. They are listed rates, not earnings.
| Mercor listing | Where RLHF appears | Listed pay |
|---|---|---|
| AI Safety Red Teamer | Preferred experience | $70 to $84 an hour |
| AI Safety Practitioner | Applying evaluation rubrics for RLHF | $60 to $70 an hour |
For general rating roles that do not mention RLHF by name, see the pay table in our post on AI evaluator jobs.

What Trainers Say About RLHF Work
On Reddit, trainers mostly treat RLHF as one task among many. An explainer post in an AI training subreddit describes it the same way the papers do: people compare two AI responses and pick the better one.
Newcomers list RLHF evaluation next to data annotation and red-teaming as ways into non-technical AI work. One person who spent six weeks applying across annotation and RLHF roles reported mostly silence and rejections, and commenters said specialist roles often want five or more years of experience plus a degree.

How to Prepare for RLHF Jobs
- Learn the vocabulary. Listings use RLHF, SFT (supervised fine-tuning, the demonstration step) and red teaming. Knowing what each means helps in the AI interview.
- Practice ranking with reasons. Rank two or three responses to the same prompt, then write one or two sentences on why the winner wins. Step 8 of the guide, Write Justifications That Pass Review, shows the format reviewers want.
- Accept that people disagree. InstructGPT labelers agreed with each other about 73 percent of the time, and Anthropic reported about 63 percent agreement between researchers and crowdworkers. Follow the project guidelines over your personal taste.
- Lead with your field. The listings that name RLHF ask for professional experience. Our guide step on building a profile that gets accepted shows how to write it up.

RLHF Jobs FAQ
What is an RLHF job?
An RLHF job is AI training work where you compare, rank or rate an AI model's responses, or write ideal responses. Those judgments train a reward model that steers the AI toward responses people prefer.
Do RLHF jobs need a technical background?
Not usually for the human feedback side. The work is reading, judging and explaining. Some listings that mention RLHF ask for experience in trust and safety, security or research, and research scientist roles need machine learning skills.
Why do RLHF tasks ask me to rank responses instead of scoring them?
Comparisons are more reliable. Hugging Face notes that scores from different people are uncalibrated and noisy, while side-by-side choices give a cleaner signal for the reward model.
Where are RLHF jobs listed?
Few listings use RLHF as the title. Look for AI evaluator, AI rater, AI tutor and AI safety roles on AI training platforms. On 2026-10-13, 13 Mercor listings mentioned RLHF in the description.
