The side hustles that make most sense for software engineers are freelance contract work, open source sponsorship, bug bounties, technical writing and coding AI training, where AI labs pay engineers to write and grade the code their models produce.
Plenty of developers already work for themselves. In the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 13.9% of respondents described themselves as independent contractors, freelancers or self-employed. Here is how each option works, from official pages and job ads read on 2026-10-13.

Freelance and Contract Work
This is the most direct use of your skills: building or fixing software for clients outside your day job. The hard part is finding work, not doing it.
On r/ExperiencedDevs, a senior engineer with a full-time job asked how to start. Replies pointed to a public GitHub portfolio over crowded freelance marketplaces, and warned that many side projects never get going.

Open Source Sponsorship
GitHub Sponsors lets people and companies fund developers who maintain open source projects. You can qualify through code, documentation, bug reports or design work, if you live in a supported region.
You set your own sponsorship tiers, one-time or monthly. GitHub says sponsorships from personal accounts carry no fees.

Bug Bounties
Companies pay security researchers for finding vulnerabilities in their products. Bugcrowd says a finding is paid only if it is valid, in scope and not a duplicate, and that out-of-scope targets are off limits.
Each program sets its own rules. HackerOne's guidance says programs should define which assets are in scope, offer safe harbor for good-faith testing, and publish disclosure rules, typically 90 days from validation or fix. Read the program brief before you test anything.

Technical Writing
Technical writers produce manuals, how-to guides and other documents that explain complex products, working closely with engineers. BLS says most are employed directly by companies, but some freelance by the assignment.
Engineers who write clear design docs and READMEs already have the core skill.

Coding AI Training
AI labs need experienced engineers to judge their models' code. Mercor keeps a standing listing for software engineers, and on 2026-10-13 it described projects like these:
- Writing an engineering problem from a system you have shipped, with its requirements and failure modes, plus the reference answer the AI is graded against.
- Grading AI-written code and design for edge cases, justified complexity and tests that really check the behavior they claim to.
- Flagging code that would pass review but fail in production because of concurrency, scale, error handling or running cost.
Other listings are narrower. A Mercor SWE-Bench task auditor role checks benchmark tasks, reference patches and test runners, and asks for real open source contributions. Ethos software engineer ads focus on design documents, API specs, pipeline docs and test plans.

Coding AI Training Roles Listed Now
| Role | Platform | Listed at | What the ad asks for | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software Engineering Expert (standing listing) | Mercor | $70 to $150/hr | Professional experience building and shipping software | Remote |
| SWE-Bench Task Auditor | Mercor | $70 to $90/hr | 3+ years in software engineering, merged open source work, Python plus Java, Go, TypeScript or C++ | United States |
| Software Engineer, Software Developer | Ethos | $80/hr | 4+ years writing design docs, pipeline documentation or API specs | United States |
| Principal or Staff Software Engineer | Ethos | $100/hr | Senior or staff engineer with 5+ years at a top technology company | Fully remote (ad lists San Francisco) |
These are the rates the ads state, not what anyone will earn. A listing is not a promise of work, and hours depend on the project.
Mercor says you join its software pool after a short AI interview and are invited when a project needs your stack, which can take a week or several months. The Ethos ads ask for 5 to 20 hours a week on your own schedule.

What Developers Say About AI Training on Reddit
We read AI training threads in r/AiTraining_Annotation up to 2026-10-13.
- Some people with full-time jobs say they enjoy AI training more than their day job, mainly for the flexibility and having no commute.
- Deactivations are a common complaint, sometimes with little explanation. Keep notes on your tasks and do not rely on one platform.

Check Your Employment Agreement First
Employment agreements can cover outside work and who owns the code you write. Read your agreement and your employer's outside-work policy before you start, and keep side work off company equipment and time. This is general information, not legal advice.
Moonlighting can also cost you at work. On r/ExperiencedDevs, engineers describe teammates noticing when someone is rarely online and their output comes in bursts.

Which Side Hustle Fits You
Freelancing suits engineers who want their own clients and projects. GitHub Sponsors suits maintainers of popular open source work. Bug bounties suit people who enjoy security testing inside each program's rules.
Technical writing suits engineers who like explaining things. Coding AI training suits experienced engineers who want remote project work with no clients to find.

Side Hustles for Software Engineers FAQ
What are the best side hustles for software engineers?
Freelance contract work, open source sponsorship, bug bounties, technical writing and coding AI training all use engineering skills directly. Which fits depends on whether you want clients, security work or remote project work.
What is coding AI training?
AI labs pay experienced engineers to write coding problems with reference answers, grade AI-written code for edge cases and production risks, and audit benchmark tasks.
Do coding AI training jobs need specific languages?
It depends on the listing. Mercor's standing software listing covers frontend, backend, mobile, DevOps, QA and security. Its SWE-Bench auditor role asked for Python plus Java, Go, TypeScript or C++.
Can I take a side hustle while employed as a developer?
Check your employment agreement and your employer's outside-work policy first, since agreements can cover outside work and code ownership. This guide does not give legal advice.
