Yes, Scale AI is a real company, and Scale AI jobs come in three kinds. Staff roles sit mostly in offices in San Francisco, New York, Washington and London. Remote contract fellowships are open to credentialed experts. Everyday AI training tasks run through Outlier and Remotasks, two platforms Scale operates. That contract work also draws complaints about removed accounts and late pay, and a California class settlement over contributor pay is waiting for final court approval.
Everything below comes from Scale's own pages and job board, Outlier's and Remotasks' sites and the official settlement site, read on 2026-10-12, plus a pass through the Outlier subreddit the same day. DigiNo has no link with Scale AI and earns nothing from it.
Is Scale AI Legit?
Scale AI's about page says it was founded in 2016, is based in San Francisco and has more than 1,000 employees. It sells training data, data labeling, model evaluations and red teaming to AI companies, businesses and governments.
A Scale job ad read on 2026-10-12 names Meta, Ernst and Young, Mayo Clinic and US government agencies, including the Army and Air Force, among the groups it works with.

Scale AI Jobs on the Careers Board
Scale's job board listed 183 open roles on 2026-10-12. Most were full-time office roles in engineering, sales, operations and public sector work.
- San Francisco and New York had the most listings.
- Washington, DC was next, then London.
- Smaller groups sat in Mexico City, Doha and Riyadh.
Two groups of listings are closer to AI training work.
- Sixteen Human Frontier Collective fellowships for legal, finance, medical, STEM, machine learning and software experts in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. They are fully remote, independent contractor roles of about six months that may be extended. Fellows design hard real-world scenarios, check AI outputs and can co-author Scale research.
- A Subject Matter Expert role in the United States and Canada, part-time and paid by the hour, covering quality audits, scoring rubrics and quality reports.
The fellowships ask for real credentials. The legal listing wants a JD or LLM, or a 2L or 3L law student, and the medical listing requires an MD or DO with board certification. US listings need US work authorization, with no visa sponsorship.
If you apply for a Scale role and are turned down, its job ads say you wait 90 days before you can be considered for the same role again.

Contract AI Training Work Through Outlier and Remotasks
Most people searching for Scale AI jobs mean task work from home. Scale does not run that under its own name.
Outlier calls itself a platform operated by Scale AI. It asks for subject knowledge, usually at least undergraduate level, and its onboarding of 30 to 90 minutes includes skill screenings and an ID check. Outlier says it pays weekly and sets no minimum hours.
Remotasks says it is powered by Scale AI and pays taskers weekly through PayPal or AirTM. In 2024, Rest of World reported that Remotasks shut down in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan and paused new sign-ups in some other countries.
We cover Outlier in more depth in our Outlier AI review.

The California Contributor Settlement
A class case named McKinney v. Scale AI is in San Francisco Superior Court. It covers former independent contractors who did work for Scale AI or a related company, Smart Ecosystem, and some workers employed through HireArt.
The court gave the settlement preliminary approval, and the final approval hearing is set for 2026-10-30. Scale and the other defendants deny breaking any law and say contributors were correctly treated as independent contractors.
If you did Scale contract work in California, check the official settlement site for whether you are covered.

What Trainers Say on Reddit
We read threads in r/outlier_ai that mention Scale from 2026-06 to 2026-10. The tone is mostly negative, as on most platform subreddits, but some themes repeat.
- Accounts deactivated by an automated flag, sometimes right after a promotion, with recent hours left unpaid.
- Late payments, with tickets unanswered for weeks.
- Contributors in California discussing the settlement notices they received.
- At least one long-time Outlier contributor who says the experience helped them land a full-time job at Scale.
Trainers on Reddit suggest keeping your own log of hours and ticket numbers from day one.
