Yes, iMerit is a real AI data company, founded in 2012, and individuals can work with it through its freelance program, iMerit Scholars. Signing up is free and open to adults, but an account alone does not mean work. You still have to pass tests and be picked for a project, and some people on Reddit wait weeks without hearing back.
Everything below comes from iMerit's own sites and the Scholars help docs, read on 2026-10-12, plus a pass through Reddit the same day. DigiNo has no link with iMerit and earns nothing from it.
Is iMerit Legit?
iMerit sells data annotation and generative AI services to companies, covering images, video, text, audio and medical data. Radha Basu founded it in 2012.
The about page says iMerit has more than 10,000 active people across more than 60 countries. The Scholars site puts its employee count at more than 5,000.
Scholars is how iMerit hires freelancers. Its FAQ calls it a program for AI-related freelance work backed by iMerit, and it says tasks pay by the hour.

What the Work Looks Like
Scholars covers healthcare, STEM, languages and the humanities. Healthcare examples on the site include transcribing a doctor's recording with every medication name spelled right, and reviewing AI-written medical notes for accuracy.
These jobs were listed on 2026-10-12.
- AI Response Evaluation Analyst and AI Image Evaluation Analyst, for people in France, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Turkey and Vietnam.
- English Language Lead, open in countries including India and the United States.
- Turkey Language Lead.
- Image tagging and personal data labeling in Serbian.
Projects run from a few days to long-term contracts. Scholars work with full-time project managers and language leads, so there is a person to ask when you are stuck.
Jobs depend on where you live. The help docs say you may see no jobs at all if none are open for your country yet.

How Signing Up Works
- Create an account and fill in the onboarding form: your resume, country of work, phone number and languages, rated on the A1 to C2 scale.
- Verify your identity with a photo or short video of your ID and yourself. Almost every project needs it.
- Take the assessments a job asks for, on a desktop computer.
- Apply. If a manager picks you, you get an offer.
- Before you accept, set up your payout and tax details and complete any checks the offer lists, such as signed documents, work authorization or a background check.
The assessments are proctored. Your webcam and microphone stay on, and the software sees your full screen and how many windows you have open.
Fill in your profile honestly and fully. iMerit says misleading details lead to permanent removal, and empty profiles are almost never picked. Only supported countries can be chosen as your country of work.
Not hearing back after you apply is normal, the docs say. ID checks can stay pending for up to two days.

How iMerit Scholars Pays
Once you have an active contract, you are paid by the hour, every week. Your rate, payment type and pay cycle are written in the offer and the contract. The public job list does not show rates, so we cannot list any here.
- You track your time with a timer while you work.
- At the end of each week you send a timesheet, and a person on the Scholars team reviews it.
- If a timesheet is rejected, you get the reason and can fix it and send it again.
- Each job pays through either Trolley or Deel. Choose your local currency where you can, because a foreign currency can add a bank fee to every payment.
Keep your timesheets current. After a contract ends you have seven days to send any missing time, and that window does not apply if the contract was terminated.

What People Say on Reddit
There are only a handful of iMerit threads, mostly in r/WFHJobs, and two posts calling it a scam were removed by moderators before anyone could read them. The pattern in what remains is about silence.
- Several people were accepted, onboarded or had signed a statement of work, then waited weeks with no project and no instructions.
- One person waited about a month and a half without a reply.
- One person grew suspicious after being asked for ID, a background check, a home address and a US Social Security number, then hearing nothing. iMerit's own docs confirm that ID and background checks are part of some offers.
- Someone offered a one-month project checked iMerit through its LinkedIn page first and found it looked genuine.
Trainers on Reddit suggest registering on the Scholars portal and keeping your profile complete, because new projects are staffed from it. iMerit runs its ID check inside your Scholars account, under Payouts and Verification, so be wary of ID requests that arrive any other way.
