Remote translation jobs come from three places: translation and localization agencies that send freelance work, direct clients, and AI companies that pay translators to check and improve what their models write in other languages.

Translation was remote-friendly before most jobs were. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says translators often work in remote settings, part-time work is common, and about 28% are self-employed. Here is how the work is changing, which credentials count, and where AI training fits, from official pages and job ads read on 2026-10-13.

What Translators Do, and How It Differs From Interpreting

Translators work with written text and usually translate into their native language. Interpreters work with spoken or signed language, in person or remotely.

BLS lists several specialties that often run remotely:

  • Medical translation, such as patient records and consent forms.
  • Legal and judicial work.
  • Localization, which adapts text and graphics so a product reads as if it was made for the target market.
  • Literary translation.

Most translators need a bachelor's degree plus full command of at least two languages, according to BLS. Subject training, such as engineering or medicine, helps with specialized work.

How Freelance Translators Find Remote Work

BLS says freelancers get work through their reputation and referrals from clients and colleagues. Many also send resumes and samples to translation and interpreting companies that match them to jobs.

Expect uneven hours. BLS describes quiet periods followed by tight deadlines and long, irregular days.

Credentials That Help

CredentialAwarded byWhat it involves
ATA certificationAmerican Translators AssociationA three-hour, open-book, proctored exam, pass or fail. Offered for specific language pairs, online or in person. Continuing education is required to keep it
Federal court interpreter certificationUS CourtsSpanish and English only. A written screener, then an oral exam in sight translation, simultaneous and consecutive interpreting
CoreCHI, CoreCHI-P, CHICCHIHealthcare interpreting. CoreCHI and CoreCHI-P cover all languages; CHI is offered in Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin
CMINBCMIMedical interpreting in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Vietnamese and Korean. Valid five years with 30 hours of continuing education

BLS says general certification is usually not required for translators. ATA calls its exam the only widely recognized measure of translation competence in the US. Court interpreting is different: BLS says most states require certification.

Machine Translation and Post-Editing

Most translation work now involves software. BLS says translators use computer-assisted translation tools, and that machine translation output is often reviewed and corrected by a person, which is called post-editing.

ATA says machine translation works best on functional texts in common language pairs, with a professional post-editing the result. It recommends a human translator for creative work, where style, nuance and idioms matter.

BLS projects 2% employment growth for interpreters and translators from 2025 to 2035, with about 6,000 openings a year. It says AI tools are making translators more efficient but that many of these jobs cannot be fully automated.

Where AI Training Fits for Translators

The same skill that makes a good post-editor, spotting where a translation is off, is what AI labs pay for. Mercor keeps a standing listing for linguists and translators. On 2026-10-13 it described projects like these:

  • Writing prompts and reference answers in your language, with the register and idiom a native reader expects.
  • Grading AI output in your language for meaning, tone, idiomatic grammar and a register that fits the setting.

Ethos ads for translators and localization specialists ask for business and legal translation review, localization and tone QA, terminology and glossary work, and bilingual client materials.

Mercor's standing language listing names Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, French, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Korean and more than a dozen other languages. The Ethos translator ads we found on 2026-10-13 were all for Japanese.

How Applying Works

On Mercor you apply with your resume, confirm where you work from and take an AI interview of about 20 minutes. Mercor then adds you to its language pool and invites you to a project listing when one needs your language. The standing listing itself does not accept or reject anyone.

Ethos screens people with a recorded AI voice interview. Its privacy policy says AI tools help evaluate the interview and that selection combines this with human review.

Is AI Training Right for You as a Translator?

It suits translators who already review machine output and want project work alongside agency jobs. It is a weaker fit if you need steady hours, since projects open and close and many listings are tied to one language or country.

Remote Translation Jobs FAQ

Can you work as a translator from home?

Yes. BLS says translators often work in remote settings, part-time work is common, and about 28% of interpreters and translators are self-employed.

Do I need a certification to get remote translation jobs?

Usually not. BLS says general certification is not typically required, though ATA certification is widely recognized. Court and medical interpreting have their own credentials, and most states require certification for court interpreters.

Is AI replacing translators?

BLS says AI tools are making translators more efficient but many of these jobs cannot be fully automated. It projects 2% growth from 2025 to 2035. Much machine output is still post-edited by people.

Are there remote Spanish translation jobs in AI training?

Yes. On 2026-10-13 Mercor listed Spanish audit roles and a standing language listing that includes Spanish. The federal court interpreter exam and CCHI's CHI credential are also offered in Spanish.

Where can translators see open AI training roles today?

On DigiNo's Remote Translation and Language Jobs in AI Training page. It lists every open role with its listed pay, weekly hours and who can apply, and it is checked every day.

Where can translators compare listed AI training pay?

DigiNo's Languages and Audio AI Trainer Pay Rates page shows the listed hourly range and median across open roles, by platform, with the date checked. These are the rates the listings state, not what anyone will earn.

Is AI training work for translators employment or contract work?

Most of it is contract work. Ethos's expert terms describe an independent contractor relationship, so you handle your own taxes. The DigiNo guide to AI trainer pay and taxes explains what that means.

Do translators have to pay to apply for AI training work?

No. The FTC says honest employers will never ask you to pay to get a job. If someone asks for a fee, a starter kit or a paid certification before you can work, treat it as a scam.
