Yes, Appen is a real company that pays people for AI data work, and today that work runs through CrowdGen, its contributor platform. Appen is listed on the Australian stock exchange and says it never charges a fee to join. Contributors on Reddit do report late invoices, cut task rates and projects that end without warning, so read both sides first.
Everything below comes from CrowdGen's and Appen's own pages, read on 2026-10-12, plus a pass through the CrowdGen subreddit the same day. DigiNo has no link with Appen and earns nothing from it.
Is Appen Legit?
CrowdGen's FAQ calls itself the contributor platform of Appen, a public data company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange under the code APX. Appen says it was founded in 1996.
The “Join our workforce” button on Appen's own site sends you to CrowdGen. The CrowdGen homepage says more than 500,000 contributors have been paid.
CrowdGen's terms are an agreement with Appen AI Inc. You must be at least 18, and Appen can suspend your access with or without notice if it suspects a breach of the terms.

What the Work Looks Like
CrowdGen describes the work as evaluating, annotating, generating and refining data that trains AI. Its homepage FAQ says most projects need subject knowledge, not technical skills, and come with guides and training.
CrowdGen now runs an expert network with its own sign-up page for each field. The legal page, for example, asks lawyers to:
- Build scenarios with contested answers that current AI models get wrong.
- Write the memo, motion or analysis to the standard a court would expect.
- Write rubrics that score AI output against real legal standards.
The subreddit shows a second kind of work too: language projects such as audio transcription in a set dialect, each with its own entry test.

How CrowdGen Pays
CrowdGen says rates are stated before you begin. Each expert page shows the top of its range. Here is what the eight pages listed on the day we checked.
| CrowdGen expert network | Listed at |
|---|---|
| Medical Clinicians | up to $450/hr |
| Legal Experts | up to $400/hr |
| FP&A Analysts | up to $180/hr |
| Accounting Experts | up to $160/hr |
| Investment Managers | up to $150/hr |
| Software Engineers | up to $150/hr |
| Linguists | up to $95/hr |
| Healthcare Administrators | up to $90/hr |
These are ceilings, not typical rates and not what anyone will earn. CrowdGen's own pages say the rate varies by project, language and country, and that you must first pass an unpaid qualification step.
Most earnings are stated in US dollars and paid in your local currency. You can withdraw through bank transfer, PayPal, Payoneer, Airtm and other options.

How Signing Up Works
- Create a CrowdGen profile and add your experience.
- For the expert network, attach a LinkedIn profile and a resume. Both are required.
- Wait for a review. CrowdGen says it follows up within 72 hours if your background matches.
- Pass the qualification for each project you want to join, then start work once you qualify.
The expert pages ask for at least five years in the field, such as legal practice, patient-facing medicine or shipping production software. You can join as many projects as you have time for.

What Contributors Say on Reddit
We read the busiest threads in r/CrowdGen from 2026-09-30 to 2026-10-12. Most are questions about tests and project access, and a few complaints repeat.
- Invoices and pay can run late. The subreddit keeps a monthly payments thread, and some members say pay arrives after the 21st of the month.
- One contributor in Bangladesh says a project cut its task rate by half and applied the cut to work already done.
- Long-time contributors describe being removed from every project at once with little explanation.
- Some people are accepted to a project but wait weeks for the login details to start.
- Transcription entry tests get many complaints about unclear instructions and strict marking.
Trainers on Reddit suggest saving every project email and keeping your own record of hours and tasks. That makes a late or short payment easier to raise.
