A generalist AI trainer works on AI training tasks that do not need one specialist field. You write prompts and reference answers on everyday questions, and you grade how well an AI model reasons, follows instructions and stays accurate. Careful reading and clear writing matter more than a credential.
Generalist roles are the easiest way in, and also the most contested. This page covers what the work is, who gets accepted, where generalist roles were listed on 2026-10-13 and what they listed for pay.
What a Generalist AI Trainer Does
Mercor keeps a standing listing for generalists. On 2026-10-13 it described the work as:
- Writing prompts and reference answers on everyday questions that have a right answer.
- Grading how well a model reasons, including whether it is correct, follows the instruction and is complete without padding.
- Flagging where a model is confidently wrong, contradicts itself or answers a question nobody asked.
Generalist listings elsewhere describe the same tasks. Invisible's Meridial Marketplace posts AI Generalist roles that involve reviewing model outputs, finding inconsistencies, giving feedback and explaining your reasoning, with written guidance and examples for each task. DataAnnotation describes its work as evaluating chatbot responses, comparing AI outputs and flagging factual errors, with General as one of its five tracks.
Rating is the core skill. Our post on AI evaluator jobs covers that side of the work in more depth.

Who Gets a Generalist Role
Generalist listings ask for fewer credentials than specialist ones. On 2026-10-13:
- Mercor's generalist listing said no particular credential is required. It asks for careful reading, sound judgment, clear writing and comfort with unclear tasks.
- Mercor's research generalist project asked for a master's degree in progress or completed, or two to three years of experience plus a bachelor's degree, and an Apple silicon MacBook.
- Meridial Marketplace's AI Generalist listings said no experience is required. They are US-only freelance roles and do not support visa sponsorship.
- DataAnnotation's General track asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, plus strong writing and critical thinking.
- Handshake's program, which also takes generalists, is open to US-based applicants with work authorization it can support.
Generalists compete with everyone. Of 286 Mercor listings on 2026-10-13, only 10 sat in its mixed and generalist group, while science alone had 63.

What Generalists Say About Getting In
Trainers on Reddit say generalist roles are the most crowded. In one thread, a person who reached the interview stage for a generalist role was turned down, and others answered with referral links rather than reasons.
Commenters on another thread said generalist roles have far more competition than specialist ones, and that specialist roles often ask for five or more years of experience plus a degree. One trainer already working as a generalist asked where else to apply, and a reply said DataAnnotation had enough work that needs only general skills and careful instruction-following.

How to Get Accepted as a Generalist
- Show careful reading and clear reasoning. Mercor says most generalist work involves explaining your reasoning. Practice with step 8 of the free guide, Write Justifications That Pass Review.
- Learn rating and ranking. Step 7, How to Rate and Rank AI Responses, covers the most common generalist task.
- Practice writing prompts with a right answer. The Mercor listing asks for prompts and reference answers, which step 9 covers in Write Prompts and Ideal Responses.
- Name anything specialist you have. A second language, a degree subject or years in a job can move you into a smaller, better-paid pool. See Build a Profile That Gets Accepted.
- Treat the first assessment seriously. DataAnnotation says its starter assessment takes about an hour and cannot be retaken.

Generalist AI Trainer FAQ
What is a generalist AI trainer?
A generalist AI trainer does AI training tasks that need no single specialist field, such as writing prompts and reference answers on everyday questions and grading how well a model reasons and follows instructions.
Do I need a degree to be a generalist AI trainer?
Not always. Mercor's generalist listing said no particular credential is required, and some US listings said no experience is required, while DataAnnotation's General track asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
Is it harder to get a generalist role than a specialist one?
